Okay, I'm trying to devis a "back-up plan" for my Rhode Island 70.3.  "Back-up plan" meaning: if I miss a 70.3 Clearwater spot by less than 5 places and I want to do another 70.3 -- quick -- and try to get another crack at it.  This lead me to check out Ironman Newfoundland (which coincidentally, I've always felt drawn to Nova Scotia and that end of the world up North).  On the Ironman site for Newfoundland it says 50 Age Group Slots.  And according to last years results, only 237 finished the race!   That would mean 21.1% of triathletes qualified for Clearwater... Am I missing something?

If they actually gave out the full 50 slots, then yes, that is probably the case.

Usually there will be a link to results that will list the participants that were awarded slots.  I would recommend taking a look at the AG that you were in and seeing how many were awarded and then at the times of the slowest people that go the slots in your AG.  That will at least give you some sense of what it will take to be in the running, even if in just an abstract way.

Was last year's race a 70.3 WC qualifier? If not, they will probably expect a lot more racers this year.

Newfoundland is one of my favorite places in the whole wide world ... I spent a few weeks there last year, travelling around the Avalon Peninsula ... so if you decide to go - you won't regret it ... make sure you take some time to travel.

If you get to that point - PM me and I can give you some really good recommendations for places to stay, things to do ...

I have a friend from up there and he always has an "interesting" time getting home. I priced out some flights and it's really hard to make it there without at least two stops from California. The course description sounds interesting, bike profile clearly shows one hill that can break your race.

I did Antwerp 70.3 last summer and when I checked the results I say people in my AG (40-45) qualified for Clearwater with times close to 6 hours. It's a flat and fast course there, so if you want a slot take a trip to Belgium. Not many people where interested in a Clearwater slot last year

BAD idea IMO.

Long way to travel. Flies and mosquitoes in the air. Danger of moose attack. I think you're probably risking more than you know by even considering this as a qualifier.

Wait, what age group are you in again?

I believe you can keep a .30-06 strapped to your back during the bike.

*eyeroll*

Shhhhhhhh, I've been trying to keep this one a secret!  I'm crowd averse and when they had the inaugural one last year, I thought COOL! And, bonus, they have NONSTOP flights from Detroit.  Yippee.  A high temp in '05 of 68.  How blissful would running the 13.1 be?

Ha, I'm also not a big fan of the heat.  You'll not see me in FL or AZ or NV anytime soon Cool

You're correct that Newfoundland is an excellent place to qualify for Clearwater.  I'm one of the race organizers.  The slots went very deep last year.  An updated slot/registrant distribution is being posted to our website shortly (www.ironmannewfoundland.com).  We're expecting less than 400 athletes, and we try to provide a very personalized race experience.  The course is very clean and safe - no moose or mosquitos

I believe Timberman went pretty deep last year too.  I know someone who raced 30-34 last year and Clearwater slots went to around 50th place.
