Subject: should I switch to sleeveless wetsuit?
I currently have a full sleeve wetsuit. When I swim wearing it, my stroke technique is changed. I find my shoulders get tired if I try to maintain a high elbow. So my stroke changes to having a more straight arm recovery. I don't know the best way to describe it, but it feels like it takes more effort during the recovery phase wearing a full sleeve wetsuit.

Has anyone had success switching from a full sleeve to a farmer john / sleeveless ?

Not an answer to your question, but how far are you pulling up the sleeves?  In order to have most suits fit properly, you will need to have the cuff about 1/2 up your forearm.  If I don't take the time to get the sleeves pulled up far enough, I can feel it in my shoulders within the first 100-200m of swimming.

I know exactly what you mean about feeling it in the shoulders. I am a strong swimmer and have tried a few full sleeve suits to no avail. Trying to recover with sleeves takes more work. I think the stronger swimmer you are the more you feel it. I say this because the people that tried to sell me on the full sleeve suits were not strong swimmers.

I have an Orca P-Flex Sleeveless and love it. I've had no regrets and have used it down to about 60 degree water.

Hope this helps.

I have a zoot sleeveless and love it.  It doesn't restrict my movement in the arms at all.  if water temp isn't a factor, rent one and see if you like it better.

I just switched to a sleeveless for similar reasons.  I also didn't like not "feeling" the water as much.  If water temps are not a big deal, I reccomend sleeveless.

Switched to sleevelss on my last IM.  I love the freedom of motion.  I have tried numerous wetsuits, and even with the rep fitting me at the water's edge, I still feel restriction in the shoulders (real or perceived).

First, I agree with the comment above, to make sure you're pulling your sleeves up far enough. Beyond that, I think it's probably normal that your shoulders would feel SOMEWHAT more tired from wearing a wetsuit. The big question is whether you think it's slowing you down, and/or whether you think you're getting some help from the sleeves. I'm not sure how much the sleeves help. I doubt the buoyancy impact is significant, but perhaps the added surface area works somewhat like paddles? I think almost all of the pros wear full-sleeve suits, you'd think they'd have analyzed it six different ways.....

x whatever on putting it on correctly, but here's another tip.  Once you make sure it's high enough on your hips and all the way up your chest, etc.  either when putting it on or after, twist your arms so the natural correction of the rubber pulls your arm forward in a swimming motion.

I am a strong swimmer, and prefer to swim without a wetsuit in any case, but when I have to this removes any shoulder fatigue that I have experienced.

Yeah, see, I have a long sleeve one, which is good for when the water is cold - but down in VA, the water is only cold in like April. But for longer distances, i think I'd still want one just for the sake of it (even though I'm a good swimmer), as long as they are legal. So I might try to nab a sleeveless one. The sleeves are fine and I know the thing fits, but I feel like the sleeves get in the way a little. With sale and a gift card, I paid $55 for a $300 wetsuit, so I don't mind having two at some point The race I was supposed to do in April definitely needed the long sleeves.

Interesting tip, thanks.

When I went from sleevless to full sleeve I lost :30 per 100yd.  New sleevless in the mail so I'll be able to do a side by side and be 100% sure.

I have had 2 fulls, 1 sleeveless and 2 piece Desoto and have 2 piece DeSoto feels most comfortable swimming and I don't think it effects my stroke at all. The sleeveless I found very constricting in chest and very uncomfortable to swim in honestly the worst. If you try a DeSoto for 2 weeks and if you don't like it you can return it. I can't tell you how much more comfortable in both chest and arm feel when swimming the DeSoto.
