Handling (cornering, braking) technique is pretty much the same as on dry road, taking into account that the lower friction will magnify any mistakes.

Here's a short piece on riding it the rain (though basically what it says is just what I said above).

1.) Prepare well in advance before you need it. Think and be observant.
2.) Wipe your rims off by quickly and ligtly applying, then releasing the brakes.
3.) Even more than dry roads, rear brake first, then front.
4.) Be sure not to lock up the rear and fishtail the bike. Modulate it with squeeze-release some presseure-squeeze technique.
5.) Hope that the course marshalls are doing their very best to control traffic. You don't want surprizes, even on dry days.

Another big tip is to stay off the road paint. Yellow and white lines get really slippery when they're wet. Also, if it has recently started raining or hasn't rained for a couple days, oil will lie on top of the water. Especially true with fresh asphalt.

Just remember, unless you're a cartoon character, it's raining on everyone.

Hi....    I'm going to be doing my first Tri in a couple of weeks and I have a question......

My question is,,, if it's raining the day of the Tri, I'm a little concerned about how I'll handle my bike on the down hills.   There's mainly one down hill that is pretty big on the course and I've been a little timid with it the couple of times I rode it (I tend to brake more then I should).  Both times it was sunny out, so I don't know how I should handle it if it's a rainy day.

Is there a certain braking technique I can do to still feel in control without wiping me or others out in the rain (hopefully it won't rain the day of the Tri, but the way this weather has been in NE, who know's).

Thanks.

you miss all the fun if you are braking down hills!

but seriously, next time it rains, get out and practice, maybe on a trail or bike path somewhere so you don't have to think about traffic, get comfortable riding on the wet roads.  they've been asking for evening showers all week and i've been kind of excited to practice riding in the rain, and i've been cursed with 80 and sunny instead Wink

Very carefully.  Squeeze to hard and you lock up and fish tail.  Don't squeeze enough and you just might not make the turn.  Basically I treat it like brakeing in dry weather, but I just start to brake earlier.

Two good points I read in another post:

1.  It's raining on everyone else, too, so don't worry if you have to slow down more than usual to make a corner because the rest of the pack does to.

2.  Stay off the paint!  Those little strips cost me a pair of shorts once.

Squeeze release,  squeeze release... and repeat as needed.

Brake when you're going straight, not when you're turning. If you do start to fishtail, release your brakes...don't mash them more.

Great timing!  Here in the drought lands of Colorado I've not really ridden in rain.  But now I have 2 days of riding scheduled in the mountains this weekend and it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow.  Thanks for the pointers!  And now a silly question, do you find that the road grime will come out of your gear or is it permanently stained after riding in the rain?

I kind of equate it to braking with non-anti-lock brakes on a car...you have to pump those in slick conditions...do the same on your bike (only a lot lighter).  Feather the brakes, give yourself PLENTY of time, and x2 on the stay off the paint!!  Those benign looking stripes can be trecherous when wet.

Good question: You'll get the black streak up your backside from grime. That's really tough to get out of clothing. I tink all of my jerseys have some form of it permanantly imprinted in them. Wear something you're not too concerned about if the weather is nasty.

You know, out of context, this response could get the thread pulled!

Ooo - that sounded a little dirty, too!

Hehe.

Thanks for the info on the gear, it's what I expected but I figured I'd ask to see if there was a secret method for dealing with it.
