Subject: Suggestions- I'm all ears....

But first my story. I am week 6 into an 8 week training program. My first Sprint is just 2 weeks away. About week 4 into my training I developed an Achilles problem. The injury is due to a number of reason. 1) Jumping into training to quickly (I should have given myself a few extra weeks). 2) Improper running shoes ( I was never fitted). As a result of this injury I really had to re-think my training strategy. I cut back 50% on all my running workouts and increased the duration of the swim and bike accordingly. I needed to build my cardio but running for an hour would have killed me. I can now run 15-20 minutes relative pain free. Instead of sneakers I am running in trail runners with jell inserts. I guess they provide the support I need. I plan to race in these but after the race I am visiting a specialty running store.

My question, in addition to the "special" shoes and jell inserts I also use an Ace bandage (the kind that goes on like a sox, NOT the kind that you have to roll on). Is it recommended that I swim with the ace bandage on? I know if I don't it will really kill my T1 time. But I'm not sure if a wet bandage under my sox will cause any issues….

Sorry for the long post it just has been an exciting and frustrating 6 weeks….

Im no pro.  So take my advice with a grain of salt.  I am nursing a plantar fascia injury and will be taking additional time in my T2 to tape my foot.  I realize it will hurt my time.  I know I could be faster if I didnt take the time to tape it... but I also know I will perform better on my run with the tape and I will be able to continue to be active without a layoff if I tape.  So I am sacraficing the T2 to tape.  My official time will be 3 to 5 minutes more than it needs to be... and I will be able to evaluate "what could have been"  had I not taped... but I am not at point that I am competing for a first place finish here... so I am going to go with what will be most benificial long term.

Good Luck!

My advice, from limited experience, is to go to the specialty running store now. When I finally went and got a proper pair of shoes I wished I'd done it last year when I started running again. The difference is night an day.

Right. What he said. I guess I'm wondering why you are waiting when you have an injury.

Otherwise, I would back off on the running until I felt like everything was fine again. You can make it through the race with the training you have had up until this point.

Better to play it safe now so you can race and train more in the future, versus blowing it all out on your first race.

I have backed off on the running.  I just need to keep a base until race day.  The trail runners feel pretty good.

Dry off your foot and ankle after the swim and put the bandage on in T1 or ride without it and pull it on in T2 if you're riding in cycling shoes and without socks.

Do you need the ace bandage for biking?  Do you wear socks on the bike?  If both of those are no, I'd probably put it on in T2.  If either are yes, I'd probably wear it for the swim, but not without having done a training brick w/ a wet foot.

I'd be a bit worried about running in a wet ace bandage.  It could move around more when it's wet and cause chafing or blisters.  Definitely try it out first.

Last year I sprained my ankle 4 weeks before my first tri. After I was OK'ed to run I wore an ankle brace like you describe. I swam without it and pulled it on in T1. I'm sure I didn't lose much time with that.

No to swimming with the bandage. Put it on in T1.

Didn't you already have a post about your shoes and were given the advice to go to a running shoe store? What are you waiting for? Until you are completely injured and unable to run at all? Why do you ask for advice and then ignore it?

I will say it to0, get to a proper running store and get fit properly. When i started running, i went to the local running store. They put me in shoe that were proper for my size and running style. I did not need different insoles, as the factory ones are very good.

Have you seen a DR.? If you are in that much pain, when you run, seek professional help. If you have to skip your race, to heal, then by all means do it. There will be other races.
