Subject: Olympic Distance Race Suggestions

Would like to focus my 2009 season on the Olympic Distance. Want to try and figure out some realistic time goals and shoot for it. My question is what would be a good Olympic Distance race to try and target for a fast time? Initially I was thinking about Lifetime Fitness, but am starting to have second thoughts. Other more late season ideas are St. Croix or Lake Geneva over in Wisconsin. Can anyone give me some good race suggestions? Would like something that is USAT sanctioned so I can have the true Olympic distance.

Thanks.

Not much I like about Lifetime fitness other than maybe watching the Pro's.  An early season one I really enjoy and I feel is really well run is Buffalo.  Liberty also puts on a real good show.

I did the Buffalo in 2007, which is what I'm hoping to go off of for my goals. I'd go back, but probably not as my focus race as I'd like to have it towards the middle/end of the season. Liberty is great as well. I haven't done the Olympic distance there, but did the 1/2 iron in both 2006 and 2007. Besides not really wanting a early season 'A' race, there is a good chance I may not be around for a race the first 2 weeks in June. Part of the reason I'm looking for a later summer race.

First of all, welcome to BT. It's nice to get some new blood on the board for a change.

One can't really compare times from one course to another anyway so what's the point of finding a course to 'target a fast time'?

Isn't a better measure of performance how you match up against your competetion on a given day on a given course rather than raw time? If you're fast on a given course it's a pretty safe assumption that everyone else will be also.

Turtleman is late in the summer, but doesn't fit your Olympic distance criteria. Your options may be a bit limited by your requirements.

Good luck in your quest and perhaps we'll see you around at some races next summer.

I don't have any suggestions for races (since I would have said Liberty and Buffalo), but I can tell you that one late season race - St. Paul Tri - is not recommended.  It's not USAT sanctioned and the bike course is terrible - not recommended.

I understand the draw to race an OLY that will give you a fast time. It might not "mean" anything overall, but lots of folks will bring up their PRs and it feels good to have a really good one.  I think that Buffalo is a good place for a fast Oly, personally, due to the run course.   But yes, it's pretty early season.

Good luck and welcome!

Actually, I live in Oronoco and the bike portion goes about a half mile from my house. Was going to do it last year, but it was closed up by time I went to registar. I'm scheduled to be on call that weekend next year, but I'm hoping to get out of it so I can make the race.

Another reason I guess I'm looking for a later season one, is due to how I'm hoping to plan my training season. I'm going to use the 12 week Olympic plan published in Triathlete Mag a while back, but before I get into the race training, I'd like to go through at least 8 weeks of both their swim and run oriented programs. If I start with the new year the two eights and the 12 put me on the Lifetime Fitness weekend. Something later, would allow me to go more week on the specific discipline programs.

They other thing that is probably going to come in to play is there is a good chance I'll be up in Canada sometime during the first couple weeks of June, which most likely is going to take Buffalo and Liberty out of the picture. Still got time to plan so I think eventually something will come through and work out.

Oronoco!  Hey, you're practically my neighbor.  I'm out near West Concord in Dodge County.  Are you a memeber of Tri Rochester?  Did you do any of the time trials?

Oh, a second on the idea to NOT do the St. Paul tri.  What a mess.  Worst bike course ever.

Here is a great later season race but you have to be a bit flexible with the true Olympic distance aspect, it's close.  If interested, then check out the Turtleman Triathlon in Shoreview.

The Lifetime course is nice but it's spendy to enter.

You can try to to find other Olympic distance race around our area.

Another possibility would be the Brewhouse Tri up outside of Duluth. The race seemed well done to me with great organization, volunteers, and a decent turnout as well. The downside of the race is the bike, though. A good portion of the bike course is pretty rough. It is a late season race though.

I've also heard that the Young Life Tri in Detroit Lakes, MN is a decent event. I don't have any personal experience with that race though. I have done another Minnesota Tri Series race though, and it was quite well done. I would assume that the organization for this one would be similar.
