Subject: SOR HIM course info....
SOR HIM newbie here.  I am not making to the site before I need to check the bike, will not be doing any rides/runs or drives of the course, so I am wondering if any of you peeps can give a newbie the lowdown on the swim, bike and run.

- swim, besides cold, along the shore?

- bike, flat, rollers, big hills????

- run, flat????

Just trying to figure out how this is going to go.  I will be the one wearing the pink breast cancer cape on the run :-).  Hoping it will help give me some magic legs for the run.  I am just looking to have fun and finish that day!

Thanks for any advice.  Much appreciated!!!!!

Well, looking down the forum a few threads offered some info -

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=167576&posts=6&start=1

1). Swim - follows the shoreline, but are out some distance, but there are some kayaking/surfboarding lifeguards inside the buoys.  Last year, due to the visibility of the fog and for safety, pulled in the buoys but didn't lengthen the course to accommodate the distance, which allowed persons to jog/walk in chest-high water if they needed to.  There was a slight current.

2). Bike - quite flat, IMHO.  There maybe a couple of "lopers", but nothing major.  There are some "bad" areas of road that are cracked and not fun hitting.  Right at the start there is this "climb"/incline, so be ready.  You come back down the same way, so the dismount is after the decline.  Be ready to slowdown/stop before the dismount.

3). Run - Flat, except within the first 1/4 - 1/2 mile is the steep incline out of the beach and into the residential area.  It's an out and back for two laps, so you'll hit that incline twice.

A pretty decent race.  The weather overall was usually a very warm, sunny day, especially during the run.  Stay hydrated.

I should add that last year the water temp was 55F or so, really cold. Prepare for that if you think it might be an issue for you. I would advise full wetsuit if you have the option. You hands and feet will still be numb when you get out...

Make sure that you rack your bike in a low gear so that you don't have to shift to get up the hill just out of transition.

the worst part is on the frontage road on the west side of the interstate... double check your water bottles as you go through this...

Phil has a nice summary, just would add:

- Its really two hills on the run after transition, but they are not huge climbs.  Dude in the neighborhood is usually out with a hose to spray you if you want.

- Aid stations are every mile, which is nice

- Water last year was unusually cold.  Yes, its normally cold, but nothing like last year.  I expect mid to upper 60s this year.  Any one been out there?

Water temp was 59 this morning...not quite as cold as last year, but cold none the less. The bike course has changed some out in the county. They tried to get rid of one bumpy road and ended up adding another. Still not too bad of a course. The run descriptions have been pretty accurate. Good luck, have a safe race.
