Subject: Just curious...

I've got my first sprint tri in 16 days and besides being scared to death, but incredibly excited, I've got a couple of questions that I hope someone could answer!

1.) Are chip timing straps provided or does it depend on the race?
2.) Any recommendations for a good pair of tri shorts?
3.) Any pre-race jitters advice? Just thinking about it is starting to give me butterflies!

Thanks for your help!

1- yes they will provide
2- check out zoot, 2xu for some good ones (zoot makes a good cheap pair)
3- you'll be fine, its a blast, enjoy it!

Yes, at every race I've been to, the straps are provided.
2.) Any recommendations for a good pair of tri shorts?
Male, Female, size, etc would probably help in determining this one.  I wear either Pearl Izumis or 2XU Comp Shorts.
3.) Any pre-race jitters advice? Just thinking about it is starting to give me butterflies!
Remember in Finding Nemo where Dory said "just keep swimming, just keep swimming" and she wasn't nervous or anything?  Channel Dory for your first race.  Just keep Swimming, Just keep riding, Just keep running.

I've found that veteran triathletes are very willing to help new ones setting-up transition and will talk to them about anything if they just ask for help and ask questions.  A lot more than cyclists, Wrestlers, etc where you have to be of their class to get help.  I don't know why that is, but I've had good experiences in pre-race and have witnessed a lot of good acts prior to a race where a new triathlete is helped by a veteran.

Just breathe, do what you can, hydrate before during and after, and finish.

1. You will pick up a chip on a strap at packet pickup or race morning. You will not be responsible for providing your own strap.
2. I really like my Desoto tri shorts.
3. Tri visuallizing the entire race. Sit down, close you eyes, and think through the race. Pay close attention to transitions: sock, sock, shoe, shoe, glasses, helmet, go.  ...

You'll do great!

1) if it is a chip timed event then yes, the strap will (should) be provided.  Be aware, I had an old velcro strap, and even though I thought it was tight enough, it came undone during the swim.  I now elec tape and safety pin it.

2)  personal preference.  I have zoot shorts that I practice in and a desoto one piece that I race in.

3) RELAX.  Get there early, walk around and familiarize yourself w/ the transition area, maybe go for a warm up jog, swim etc.  Talk to people around you.  You'll most likely find someone else in your same situation.  Or at least someone who has been in your situation.  Practice your transitions at home, before the race, one less thing to worry about.  Start at the back of the swim and away from the line.  IMO its better to pass people on your first OWS than get passed and swum over in a wave start.

And most importantly - Have fun

I don't know if you are female or not... but I have had very bad experiences with Zoot tri shorts. Shall we say they put a seam in a very uncomfortable place.

I like Pearl Izumi tri shorts.

Be sure to talk to other athletes before and after the race. At the very least introduce yourself to your neighbors in transition. There is much to be learned from other athletes. That will help calm your nerves.

1.  As has been said, they'll provide the strap.  Sometimes, though, it is one of those plastic snap-closure wristbands (like you'd get at a hospital) rather than the velcro-and-neoprene kind.  If you don't like that kind of band (they can sort of dangle if there isn't a hole at just the right size for your ankle), you could use your own, but I never have.

2.  I'm a big fan of Zoot shorts, mostly because I really like the small mesh side pockets.  But also because they're well-constructed.

3.  Relax.  Visualize your race (esp. your transitions).  And really, really, breathe and center...and relax some more...before the swim.  Don't know if your tri is a pool swim or open water, but it's almost impossible not to get really jacked up by your first OWS wave start and that can lead to hyperventilating and--for some people--even a little panic.  It's almost impossible to replicate the conditions of the swim start in training, so just really talk to yourself before the start to plant the seeds for remembering to settle down once you've gotten started...remind yourself to let go of the inevitable adrenaline rush of the start once you are underway.

Good luck.

1.  Yes
2.  I like 2XU stuff (but I'm a guy so that is not real helpful for you)
3.  Don't think too much.  Warm up properly.  Use the potty.

I'm a 5'10" tall female and love my Sugoi tri shorts. I wear a size large and they are super comfy and don't cut into my thighs at all.
