Some races are USAT sanctioned and will require a license to race from all racers.  If this is true of your race, and you don't have an annual USAT membership, you will be obligated to purchase a 1-day license.  It's usually charged at registration (or a $10 discount for USAT members) and then an application is filled out when you pick up your race packet.  But not all tris are USAT sanctioned, so you don't need to worry about it unless asked.

Wetsuits are never "required" and sometimes they are not allowed.  If the water temp is above 78 degrees on race day, you may not wear a wet suit.  If you are not worried about being cold, you don't need to worry about it.

Some folks like to wear wetsuits when possible, because they provide more streamlining and also the bouyancy of the suit helps swimmers with balance issues.  But I would tell any beginner that if they are okay without the suit, and it's not a long swim, to not bother.  If you do decide to try a wetsuit, make sure it's swim specific (i.e. not a scuba suit, or shortie suit used for water skiing, surfing, etc) because they have a slicker outside and are built to allow arm rotation.  You can usually rent them from local tri shops.  Make sure you do one practice open water swim in the suit, if so.  Also, practice taking it off because you will need to do this before the bike portion.

This is a general overview, there's lots to say.  You may wish to search the forum for more threads on wetsuits and whatever else comes up.

Good luck!

From the races I've done, you just pay the USAT fee when you sign up for the race, if you are a member, you get $10 off the fee. That is the way every USAT race I've done is set up.

I've never seen wetsuits actually be mandatory. I wear mine all time time and really like it but it's a personal preference.

Have fun and good luck!

Sort of - if you're not a member, you pay $10 more than the fee. The fee advertised will be what it would cost a USAT member. So if the fee for the race says "$65", if you're not a USAT member, it's actually $75. I've never seen it advertised the other way around.

so what do you consider a long swim?

Greg-

I just did the Chicago Tri Sprint (1/2 mile swim) without a wetsuit.  It was 63 degrees, and I spent the first 15 minutes of my swim trying to keep warm.  I thought the swim would be taking me 18-20, max, but it took 25.

Get the wetsuit, especially if you're anywhere close to a cold water temp.

Anyway... just check out the sign-up details and it should be clear, and you can always ask the Race contact person.

Greg - where is the swim and what's the length?  You have now seen one case where it's really recommended from Stuy119.  To compare, my last race was 78.9 degrees for 600 yards and most folks really don't "need" a wet suit for that.   It's very relative.

X2, X3  on the USAT fee, it'll be included in the race fee.

Wetsuit.  Not a requirement, swim in your tri-suit, if thats how you practice.

However, if you go the wetsuit route and many people highly reccomend them; you need to know that they provide 2 main purposes.  1. Warmth, pretty obvious.  2 Speed/Bouyancy.  Tri-specific / Swiming specific wetsuits are designed to float your hips and thighs so in the water you stay horizontal on the surface of the water.  I didn't believe it would make a difference but its huge.  Tri specific wetsuits also have a rubber coating on the outside and they glide through the water, also a big deal.  In colder races you'll see people pull scuba and ski-ing suits out of the closet and try to swim  and it just doesn't workout.

For your first race don't spend a bunch of money and a brand new suit.  If you wanna try one out rent or get something used...  just make sure its tri-specific.

I have a DESoto 2 piece suit, and they have great info on their website.

gregpape23 - 2009-09-10 11:00 AM So where would one rent a tri-specific wetsuit? Online? All the stores near me only sell scuba specific.

Thanks again for all your help.

f2r.com

I rented mine from them last year - $45 w/ about $20 for shipping.  you'll need a $105 deposit.  If you like it, keep it.  Otherwise, you have about 21 days to get it back to them.  Plenty of time to get it before your race and try it out.

another is wetsuitrental.com  I havent used them but some on this site have

Check your local area for Bike shops that specialize in Tris as they will also often rent/sell wetsuits as well as lots of other Tri Gear. You can also do a search for local Triathlon stores in your area and that might bring some up as well. Otherwise I have heard good things about Wetsuitrentals.com
