Jeff Galloway came and spoke at work today thanks to our running club. For those who don't know, he believes runners should incorporate walking into their training. (i.e. run 4 minutes, walk 1- or- run 8, walk 1, depending on your goals, mileage, or fitness level) as your muscles have time to rest and get ready for the next few miles. He told some interesting stories too. He loves Power Bars as "bridge" (snack) food and thinks you should do a 1/3 or 1/2 gu/gel every mile during a race (running).

Kinda cool to hear him speak about life, running, and fitness.

I got the same advice from a member of a local running club.. and stupidly, it's like I had no idea I could do that.  So, rather than run a mile, throw up and go home... I tried it, ran 5 min, walked 2 min, and did 5k... and it worked great... little by little, reduced my walk time, til I could run 5k.. now, under 11 minute miles and running 6.5k... it was great advice!

that's cool that you were able to meet him! i've read parts of his marathon training book and it was pretty interesting. when you read his rationale for walking periodically it makes sense.

I swear by him. There is no way on earth my body could run for 26.2 miles BUT I can run and walk it. I wak one minute in every 10 and it, I believe, has saved my knees but more importantly it has shown me I can do it.

I did a sprint tri last weekend and a girl beat me on the run that walked through the aid stations.  She was in my AG so I was very happy to pass her when she walked through the last station, but lo and behold, she mananged to catch me again and beat me by 10-20 seconds.  So I guess that walking didn't hurt her at all, and helped her keep her running strong till the end.

i trained and ran a marathon (or for purists, ran/walked) using his system-- I finished in 4:26, which was WAY faster than I ever thought I could do it. And the best part? I was running around with kids the next day and felt great (I was a teacher at the time)

I am always one to advocate for Galloway. My first marathon was solely on Jeff's training program as millions of others can attest to as well.

Of course there are purists that denounce anything less then a slow shuffle, however, pro athletes such as Ironman legend, Paula Newby-Fraser walked the aid stations to 1) properly ingest fluids/foods and 2) rest the over-used muscles for a brief period.

We all know how well she has done and is still doing.

I totally agree with Galloway on walk/run. Using a walk/run arrangement (run 25 minutes/walk 5) I'm able to quickly ramp up my long run mileage for my annual marathon without injury. It's also a great way to break up the monotony of a 3+ hour run. While I've never been fast, I ran one of my best marathons (4:01) using a run 10 minute / walk 1 minute strategy.

As a footnote, he's a very nice guy personally. I flew through Atlanta once, and he was on the same flight. Very gracious with his time.

I bought his Marathon book. I'm a believer. It certainly makes the run less daunting.

I didn't realize it was his program, but its definitely how I've been able to get in shape running again. Otherwise it would have been far to demoralizing to realize just how little I can actually run. It gave me small increments to work on and rests for both my legs and my breathing in between.

I use Galloway's theory & it works well for  44 yr old muscles that don't recover as fast as they used to, using the walk breaks allows you to run long one day & run again the next.
