Aie, I found out today that the program I desperately want into at Carnegie Mellon University only takes 6 people, 6!!! That's NUTS. And I can imagine that there are people out there more brilliant/talented than I. Gaaaaaah. And why is it so hard to find a graduate program in art? Seriously people.

May I ask what you want to do with your Art degree? Just curious.

I'm debating grad school and the consequences in getting another degree that I won't like/use. I just can't let myself take the plunge until I'm absolutely sure.

Grad school is great. It can be crazy and stressful at times but if you know how to manage your time and life you'll do fine. You'll cycle alot throughout the year. af ew months of constant work then a few months of almost nothing to do. Take the plunge, just go some place where you like to be.

Have you looked over seas? They might be more open to Art programs than the US.

I don't want to sound mean but if you look at the usefulness of advanced art program you'll find the answer to why it's hard to find one.

Hey...how about RISD or SCAD? If you go to SCAD, you'll be an official Georgia BTer. And everybody know we rule.

Enh. My former program at Carnegie Mellon takes 6-7 people a year; by the second year of my program, only two remained.

Apply. You can't catch a fish if your hook isn't in the water.

the art program here at UW is great for those who want to be art educators, and it is also very well known for book arts....

but yeah, grad school is fun, invigorating challenging, and EXPENSIVE. There are only a handful of careers that will actually earn enough more w/ the degree to pay for it!

I think that the idea of looking overseas is a great idea. I am currently in my 2nd year of university out of 4. I am looking to head to england for my final year. Also university is a lot better than working full time. It is easier to plan your trainning, you don't have to worried about going to the swimming pool or gym in peak hours.

I'm about halfway through my 1 year program in Public Relations at Syracuse University. My program originally only accepted 12 people per year.. It was a long shot for me to get in, but I put together the best application i could, sent it on its way... and 4 months later they told me i was accepted... Few things have made me happier than that acceptance letter.

Grad school is very expensive, and if you are going to go, you might as well go to one of the best schools. So give it a shot! You might end up just as happy as me, but also lack any sort of free time and discretionary spending! :-)

All graduate school programs are super competitive. I didn't get in to a program in my field the first time that I applied. I decided to take some time off and see if going to grad school was still what I wanted in a year. It was and I applied and the second time I got in. If it's something you really want to do, I'm sure you can find a way to make it happen.

Try checking out other schools as a backup. I'm at Virginia Commonwealth University, which is a little less known than other schools. We have a great art program - top rated in the country for sculpture.

Good luck and don't get too frustrated.

I love art. I have a double major in Journalism and Art-Photo with a minor in art history. I've thought about doing art history as a grad, also just getting a degree in studio art, or going to study curation/museum administration. I just want to be involved in art. I would love to be an art professor/art mentor. I just love that there's that freedom to do my work, and to do research/scholarly work and to help others with their work. It's very exciting.

So far I've come up with the following schools:
Carnegie Mellon is number 1 because of location, rep, etc.
Ohio State- because I've allready lived out here for 4 years, I can easily find an apartment, its nice (but their robes for MA's are really effing ugly)
Bard College- for Curatorial Studies
Rutgers
Yale (yea, right, and I'll run a sub 7 mile).
