Subject: First tri at 55 Hello, I'm Sally in Southeastern NC. I remember, after finishing the 5-mile Lake Waccamaw Labor Day Swim just before I turned 40 and then again just before 50, hearing someone say a "real" athlete was someone who could finish that kind of swim faster than I did, with my easy side and breaststrokes. As the mother of two grown daughters who are athletic and married to athletes, I've always felt that title was out of my reach. But I wanted it! Last fall I watched one of my sons-in-law finish his first sprint tri, and I watched the other triathletes as well. There were women and men my age and seemingly like me, with the extra pounds, except they were the ones tri-ing! So when the son-in-law and my daughter decided to do another sprint tri in July, I got on board. I've bought and read a few books, but this website has been the best information, inspiration, and motivation for me. I've got a little less than 5 months but I'm well on my way using the logs and learning what will work for me. I've been going to the Curves women's fitness center for a year and will continue doing that for my strength training. I'm currently using my treadmill and a trainer on my bike indoors, but I'll soon be heading outdoors. My concern is feeling comfortable and safe on my bike since I've gotten clipless pedals and shoes, and also feeling like I can ride the distance, which will be 15 miles. I'm going to check out a cycling club in Wilmington, about an hour away, to get some experience on the road and in groups. So I've begun! And I'm thankful to be able to read the helpful and encouraging words from others on this site. Best wishes in your races and life. |
