Hello, I'm Sally in Southeastern NC. I remember, after finishing the 5-mile Lake Waccamaw Labor Day Swim just before I turned 40 and then again just before 50, hearing someone say a "real" athlete was someone who could finish that kind of swim faster than I did, with my easy side and breaststrokes. As the mother of two grown daughters who are athletic and married to athletes, I've always felt that title was out of my reach. But I wanted it! Last fall I watched one of my sons-in-law finish his first sprint tri, and I watched the other triathletes as well. There were women and men my age and seemingly like me, with the extra pounds, except they were the ones tri-ing! So when the son-in-law and my daughter decided to do another sprint tri in July, I got on board. I've bought and read a few books, but this website has been the best information, inspiration, and motivation for me. I've got a little less than 5 months but I'm well on my way using the logs and learning what will work for me. I've been going to the Curves women's fitness center for a year and will continue doing that for my strength training. I'm currently using my treadmill and a trainer on my bike indoors, but I'll soon be heading outdoors. My concern is feeling comfortable and safe on my bike since I've gotten clipless pedals and shoes, and also feeling like I can ride the distance, which will be 15 miles. I'm going to check out a cycling club in Wilmington, about an hour away, to get some experience on the road and in groups. So I've begun! And I'm thankful to be able to read the helpful and encouraging words from others on this site. Best wishes in your races and life.

I'd kinda like to find that person and smack 'em. A "real" athlete is one that gets out there and DOES IT.

Welcome to the insanity!

Welcome to BT! Best wishes to you too and good luck. From what you write, it seems that you've kept being active throughout your life and you've been training a lot lately. You are already an ATHLETE! You will do fine in your sprint tri, and, I am sure, you will be an inspiration to a lot of other people.

Welcome to BT.  This is an awesome site!  My best friend did her first tri last year at 56.  I admire her so much.   Enjoy training and your tri!

Welcome.  Did my first triathlon two years ago at age 50. I've become the envy of many of my 50ish friends who always say they're going start exercising, but never do.

I really enjoy the training and have met many new friends of all ages.  It's a great sport and a great way of life.

BT is a great place for information and inspiration.

YOu hit a nerve here! I am (only) 43 and I find other women's comments pretty humorous. There is a large percentage of women who avoid me because I am out excercising. Then there are the women who make excuses or say they are going to start excercising soon. And then there are the comments that I am somehow naturally athletic. And of course, there are the ones that I connect with and become friends!

Have fun!

GOOD FOR YOU>  It is never too late, Example: 66 year old.  My hats off to him also.  @ 50 I am just begining as of October '05.  Keep with it, and use BT>  The bike is what frightens me most.  We have some Bike lanes in Clearwater but, not many.   Group riding is really good.  They keep you going because you don't want to fall behind.   GO GIRL! :.)

Sally,

You have a great story. welcome to the tribe! On cycling, most of us got freaked out in the beginning by the traffic and how vulnerable we are on our bikes. Just remember, the only way to get over that is time in the saddle. Like anything else, your anxiety will yield to experience.

Welcome Sally. I was at a tri swimming lesson earlier today. One guy there did Ironman Canada a year and a half ago, in the 70-75 age group! He's not slowing down at all either. I just did my first couple of sprints last year but I'm only 48. You've got a good start (congratulations!) and you'll do fine.
