Subject: Banned Substances
The link that Jim provided in teh Insomnia thread is a really interesting read! Check this out. Alcohol is not prohibited. It is only prohibited at certain levels in various sports if I read it correctly. THese are the tolerated levels within competition. For reference, most states have a "legal driving limit" of .08 to .1 g/L. Why arn't the tolerated leves zero?

Aeronautic (FAI) (0.20 g/L)
• Archery (FITA, IPC) (0.10 g/L)
• Automobile (FIA) (0.10 g/L)
• Billiards (WCBS) (0.20 g/L)
• Boules (CMSB,IPC bowls) (0.10 g/L)
• Karate (WKF) (0.10 g/L)
• Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) (0.10 g/L) for disciplines involving
shooting
• Motorcycling (FIM) (0.10 g/L)
• Power boating (UIM) (0.30 g/L)

Also, I thought it was odd that narcotics were listed, I mean, it'd be stupid to use them, right? Check out the list of side effects (some of which I've never seen on a package insert for routine medical use)
Narcotics are typically used for the relief of pain. Some of the effects
include:
• Sensation of euphoria
• Psychological stimulation
• A false feeling of invincibility
• Illusions of athletic prowess beyond an athlete’s inherent ability
• Increased pain threshold and failure to recognize injury

Narcotics taken regularly fail to create the euphoric side effects, which is why dopeheads require increasingly high doses, and which is why legitimate users (cancer) can continue to function well, even drive, when on regular doses. I find it hard to believe that anyone experiencing an "illusion of athletic prowess" from taking narcotics for competition would be in any shape to actually compete!

I think it's interesting that you can drink more to shoot arrows than you can to drive a car.

I think narcotics are listed because they can take the edge off of pain from injuries or training, and therefore present an unfair advantage. What I don't get is why cannabis is on the list. Stoners don't run faster, I'm pretty sure.

Thank goodness.

Man, to think of the people that would be disqualified! I'd feel sorry for them.

Can anyone tell me if Naproxen (generic equiv for Naprosyn) is considered an illegal substance for triathletes?

It's not like I'm gonna get tested for it in a race or anything but I'm one of those guys who really likes to follow the rules.

My doctor prescribed it for my severe back pain due to the fact that I have scoliosis with a severity of 32 degrees.  Some mornings are so bad it takes me 20min of stretching plus a nice hot shower just to get going.  My prescribed dosage is 500mg up to 2x a day but I'm lucky to go through a bottle of 60 in 6 months.

If it is considered a banned drug I'll just have to stop using it as a crutch and grit my teeth through the hard times.

The legal limit in FL for boating is 0.08.  At 0.30, I'd worry about them just falling out of the boat and drowning, let alone trying to operate it safely.

It's not. Naproxen Sodium is the OTC drug Aleve.
