Subject: Banned Substances The link that Jim provided in teh Insomnia thread is a really interesting read! Check this out. Alcohol is not prohibited. It is only prohibited at certain levels in various sports if I read it correctly. THese are the tolerated levels within competition. For reference, most states have a "legal driving limit" of .08 to .1 g/L. Why arn't the tolerated leves zero?
Aeronautic (FAI ) (0.20 g/L )
• Archery (FITA, IPC ) (0.10 g/L )
• Automobile (FIA ) (0.10 g/L )
• Billiards (WCBS ) (0.20 g/L )
• Boules (CMSB,IPC bowls ) (0.10 g/L )
• Karate (WKF ) (0.10 g/L )
• Modern Pentathlon (UIPM ) (0.10 g/L ) for disciplines involving
shooting
• Motorcycling (FIM ) (0.10 g/L )
• Power boating (UIM ) (0.30 g/L )
Also, I thought it was odd that narcotics were listed, I mean, it'd be stupid to use them, right? Check out the list of side effects (some of which I've never seen on a package insert for routine medical use )
Narcotics are typically used for the relief of pain. Some of the effects
include:
• Sensation of euphoria
• Psychological stimulation
• A false feeling of invincibility
• Illusions of athletic prowess beyond an athlete’s inherent ability
• Increased pain threshold and failure to recognize injury
Narcotics taken regularly fail to create the euphoric side effects, which is why dopeheads require increasingly high doses, and which is why legitimate users (cancer ) can continue to function well, even drive, when on regular doses. I find it hard to believe that anyone experiencing an "illusion of athletic prowess" from taking narcotics for competition would be in any shape to actually compete!
