This happens to me often and I wondered if anybody else gets this...

It seems to me that when swimming, I can get in a zone where I feel like I am slicing through the water, like I could do this all day long, then I get to the wall, turn around and I am in the total opposite state than I was. It is not as smooth, seems like I am taking in more water, etc... I wonder to myself what I was doing different from 20 seconds ago that could make such a difference in this lap vs. the last.

I've had this feeling, too-- don't know why.

I'm also convinced I'm faster and smoother swimming in one particular direction of the pool than the other. I almost feel like there's a current! Weird.

Yep, I get the same feeling, although normally my actual lap times aren't all that different when I have the feeling.  I chalk it up to massive inexperience on my part.  I just keep swimming, and hope to get better....

Most definately; I am assuming one side is stronger than the other, so I concentrate harder on the one that feels harder.

It has to do with gravitational pull and the earth's rotation, similar to the way water swirls in a different direction when you flush in North America vs Australia.

I notice the same thing, more so when I am swimming a longer continuous swim. So I started doing intervals and that helped out a lot.

Yeah I always run faster towards the east than I do towards the west.  Must be the same thing.

Your pool may not be level. You probably are going faster on the downhill part.

This happens to me also. Depending on which lane I get there could be a little bit of a current because there are three jets down each side of the pool, and they are angled a bit and are pretty strong. But I get the feeling no matter which lane I swim in.

I have just started swimming again and it seems there is a wall I have to swim through each stroke.

Are you swimming during high tide or low tide?
