Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Found an incredible deal while bike shopping today. It's a 2006 Trek Pilot 5.9 (http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2006&Brand=Trek&Model=Pilot+5.9&Type=bike) which apparently would normally retail for $4700 priced at $2600. The shop also includes a fit and free tune-ups for life. I tried the bike and it felt great except for a small problem with the gears (one gear had a pretty significant click) which they said they would work out after I bought it. Otherwise the bike felt great...it seemed to fit me perfectly and I enjoyed riding it. It is full dura ace which is way higher level than I would consider otherwise (I've been looking at ultegra or ultegra/105 mostly). However the skeptic in me is nervous. It just seems like one of those too good to be true things. I don't think they're purposely selling a bad bike or anything, and I figure with the free tune ups for life thing if there's anything wrong with it i'll be able to take it in and have them fix it. (Not to mention, with the components on it if i ever need to sell it i could probably get a good amount for it!) Anyway it seems to make sense but I just have to wonder if there's something wrong with it and why no one else has bought it. I asked if there was anything wrong with it and they showed me a couple of scrapes in the paint from it being moved around a lot. Otherwise the only thing I can find wrong with it is that it's a blue trek and I already have a blue trek. I'm not sure I want my bikes matching that much! lol But as the lady in the store said, at least I won't have to buy new matching gear. |

Full Carbon frame for nada. I would pull the trigger. If you're really worried about the 'click' in one of the gears you may consider changing out the cassette and chain. A new cassette and chain might cost $120 to $150. Free servicing for life is a real sweetener. Go For It! |

Have you gotten a fit first? Ideally you get fit and they make sure the bike or bikes you test ride will fit you. Some shops will adjust the bike to fit you to test ride it which may mean changing out the stem, getting reach, saddle height all right so you can really tell the difference in the bike. Do you want a road bike? For that price you can get a great carbon tri bike with Ultegra. Have you shopped around, asked a lot of questions, ridden quite a few bikes. I'd do all those things first. Clearly this bike has been sitting around awhile it probably won't sell in the next couple days. My LBS says technology improvements on bikes is about 10% a year so you are getting a bike from '06 and '09s are out so that would mean 30% difference. It is the way they compare prices of new to old model year bikes in a general sense. Enjoy the process..I love buying new bikes..I just got my newest bike 2 days ago.

If it fits you, then that's a great deal. DA from 2006 is likely 7800 or 1st generation 10 speed. They've just released 7900 and the reviews are that it's only marginally better. This means you're getting a top-notch groupset. As for the frame, the new Madone IS a better frame, but that Pilot surely is quality beyond most. I'd grab the deal while it's there assuming you're buying this bike b/c you really are shopping for one and not an impulse decision. Pics when you do buy please! |

Why don't you first check online before take a decision....??? Remember....the new 2009 bikes will be out in the market very soon....and....that means there will be great Close-Outs and Sales of 2007 and 2008 bikes.... |

If you're looking for a dedicated road bike, though, it's a great deal. Treks lack some of the bling factor of the more esoteric/foreign brands but they're solid bikes that will serve you well. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For that price ($4,700) you could definitely buy a full carbon Tri-bike (P2 Ult for $2,500, or P3 DA for around $4,500) if that is the route you wanted to take. Of course, if you wanted to stick with the road bike route, that is a nice bike. Personally, I would go with the 2008 P2 Ult Tri-bike, and still have $2,000 left over for wheels. |

The very very upper end of my price range is $3000, and that's pushin it. I've decided on a road bike bc I've never ridden anything but a mtn. bike and I feel like I need that middle step before going to a tri bike. My back gets sore riding a road bike so it'd kill me to be aero! Some day i'll look into a tri bike. This is a well thought out decision. I've done pretty much nothing but shop for bikes for the last week now, and I've test ridden so many I can barely keep them all straight. This is one of the best fits I've found, and it was more comfortable than the specialized I thought I had decided on. I haven't had an actual fit from the shop though...they don't do that just for test rides I don't think. I am a little sad at the lack of blinginess....(is that a word?). I have definitely ridden some that look a lot faster. Not a deal breaker....just a little sad. And KathyG, I wish I enjoyed buying bikes! The process was fun at the start but now it's way too stressful! I wish the right bike would just fall into my lap cus I can't seem to make the decision. I'm so scared that as soon as I buy it I'm going to find something different or better, even though I think I've ridden most of the bikes in town! I'm tempted just to wait for the '09s to come out but I've already put off getting a bike for a year, i hate to wait longer. |

The Pilot is meant for a more upright style rider. If you don't think "that's cool", bling-less or optimal, tell that to Eddy Merckx who broke the mold by adopting the upright position. The biggest benefit will be: You'll love this bike and ride more. Day by day, ride after ride, you'll do something like accelerate away from a stop and think "Damn, that's me?" Write the check... Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is the key consideration: tri-bike vs. road bike. I opted for a road bike for my first, a Bianchi Imola ... and loved it. Great bike with a good groupe that was had a reasonable cost. The thought was that if this whole triathlon thing did not work out then I would have a road bike for group rides (which is still one of my favorite parts about training). Tried to put aerobars on the road bike ... and it just did not work. The fit was wrong, uncomfortable, unnatural. This led to the purchase of a Cervelo Dual - and the expense of another bike. If you are thinking tri-bike then your price point of ~$2700 is actually considered to be 'the sweet spot' between money spent and bike received. So unfortunately for me I will once again be putting off bike shopping....probably until the '09s start coming out since selection seems pretty sparse right now. At least I have a good idea of what I want. Some day I WILL own a road bike! lol |

I think it's a 54...maybe a 56...i seem to switch between those two sizes for different brands. They might still have it on hold for me...i should probably call them and tell them I changed my mind... |
