Subject: Am I totally screwed or what?

I'm doing the Silverman HIM in 11 days.  4 days ago I spent several hours laying a bunch of sod in my yard.  Felt fine while I was doing it, and for a day or so after, but I am paying dearly for it now.  My left knee hurts, my right calf hurts now from 2 days of limping, and the muscles on my inner thighs hurt a lot too.  Most disturbing is the knee since I was having issues with it earlier this year.  Today is the first day I've been able to walk like a normal person (somewhat) but I'm still in pain.

So, I guess my question is this - how should I approach these last days of training?  I was planning on doing a moderately long bike and run last weekend, but obviously that didn't happen, and I haven't done anything in 2 days.  Of course now I'm supposed to be tapering.  I'm thinking that I probably won't run until at least tomorrow, maybe Friday.  Do I need to HTFU and stop panicking, and just do what I can until the race?

take care of the knee - ice, nsaids.

any training you do now is not really going to make a difference race day

go have a great race.

Laying sod sucks!! 10 palets by myself 3 years ago, lesson learned its worth the $$ to have someone do it.

As far as training till the race, its not going to do you any good to train if your hurting. I had a knee injury befor Florida 70.3 this year and didn't run for 5 weeks up until race day, I just wanted to heel up and do the best I could without puting myself out for the rest of the year.
Be careful and good luck, hope it gets better!!

suffice to say us in the northeast are green with envy that you can do a tri race in 11 days .. we could too but it'd be 30..

Laying so at the end of October, who does that, how is that possible.  Oh, California, I see.

You will be fine. Take it easy, maybe do some swimming if you can do that so you at least feel like you are doing something.  Give the knee and calf a break, maybe see a massage therapist to work your knots out.  I don't know much about that type of stuff but if your thigh muscle and calf are tight it might just automatically screw up your knee.

Good luck and have fun at the race!

Ok............. now I'm worried.  I know you can't lose fitness in a week, but I ran today for the first time since last Friday and I felt like absolute crap.  The soreness is pretty much gone, but I felt SO sluggish.  I know it's just one bad workout and maybe I should stop freaking out, but I can't help it.... my race is in 9 days!!!

yeah. stop freakin' out. take it easy and go into the race well rested. trust in your training. you are going to do fine. continue with your normal taper if you are feeling okay, but don't be afraid to totally bail on workouts if you are not feeling right.

I laid sod three years ago and it died over the winter. The next spring I put down $20 of grass seed and finally everything is back to good. I learned that in NM you have to water the lawn in the winter or it will die.

You'll be fine. Were you planning on medaling or just having a good time? Don't worry about it. I always feel sluggish.

Yeah, my goal is to cross the finish line under my own power, preferably before the full finishers start coming in.

I hope my sod doesn't die!!!  It looks good so far.  We put in sprinklers and it gets watered every morning.  We're 11 miles or so from the ocean with no mountains in between, so it is very mild here.  My primary challenge is keeping the dog off of it for the next couple weeks.

You should be in your taper anyway. The light spinning, and swimming are a good idea. Keep the runs short, maybe a treadmill to ease the impact. Start working on your 'mental' game or you will be screwed.
