Subject: 70.3 Hydration setup
My next race will be my first 70.3 in September.   I started thinking about my hydration/nutrition and was wanting some ideas on how to set my bike up for training and the race itself.

Right now all i have is an aero bottle on my tri bike.   I like the bottle, but the splashing drives me nuts and i'm about convinced to quit using it.   I also haven't installed any bottle holders anywhere on the bike yet.

So here is what i'm considering doing....

#1.   I like the new speedfil system and might invest in that.   It's a 40oz. bottle that mounts in the frame that has a tube that extends up through the aero bars to drink.    That would eliminate the splashing/sloshing around i hate with the aero bottle.

#2.   Rear hydration/bottle carrier.   I like this idea too where i just use my own water bottles and swap them out on the course for hydration.

and for other nutrition, i'm leaning towards a bento box type setup to put some items i'm gonna eat.

Anyone got any suggestions before i spend alot of money?   I really wanna get rid of the aero bottle but i'm not sure what route to take.

I'm also doing my first half this fall and for my rides of 60-70 miles I've been using my aero bottle (no splash problems) and two standard frame mounted water bottles. I turn my yellow sponge thing on its side and along with the foam cover that has eliminated the splashing . For nutrition I use Infinit and have not had a problem yet and plan on going straight liquid during the race. What race are you doing?

I see that the new aerobottles have a cover on the top. This one has two chambers, both with lids. I think I'm going to invest the $20 and get a new one. The splashing drives me nuts, too, and ruined some of my race nutrition from splashing into my bento box in my last race

I used to use a 2-bottle rear hydration system but just went with an aero bottle and one on the bike this last time - grabbed water at each aid station and dumped it into the aero bottle then chucked the empty water bottle all within the aid station area. I got rid of the rear hydration system partly to eliminate weight, and partly because I'm just not that comfortable reaching back and juggling bottles during a race. And party because the screw kept coming loose. And partly because it was really crowded back there with the 2 bottles AND my saddle bag. I'll still use it for long training rides, but it's too much (for me) to race with.

I used to use a profile aero bottle but I was never super happy with it; I recently went with Jordan Rapp Slowtwitch approved water bottle between aerobars shown below. I like this set up very much, it is very comfortable to drink and in races if you need a new bottle you can grab any of the ones on the course!

It is super easy to set up, just a bottle cage and some zipties and voila!

Jorge or Pennstate

that looks just like something i would want for a race.   however, what about long training rides?   what do you do when you don't have someone giving you extra bottles like in a race?

and just so i'm clear on installing one of those.....just a cage and zipp ties is all you need?

I have a bontrager aero bottle for the frame; that and the aerobars cage gives me two bottles good enough for 2 hr ride (+/-). I usually ride around areas where I can do a quick pit stop refuel and keep on moving within minutes.

try Infinit Nutrition...I use it and it's easy - no more bars, gels, etc,. etc. all day.  I use a standard mix in my aero bottle up front, and a double strength mix in my down tub bottle.  When the aero front is empty, I grab water from the aid station, fill it 1/2 way, then follow with the concentrated Infinit Mix.

Here is my discount code if you want to give it a try; "infinitnw". (www.infinitnutrition.com) - I am allowed to share that w/ fello age group athletes.  Many of the pros use it..

You can custom make your drink - how much flavor, protien, carbs, electrolytes, etc.  I tested it on a 150 mile one day bike race - it's all I used - it was great!

Get yourself one of those shower poofies from Walmart for your aero bottle if you are still using the yellow thing. I have not had any sloshing problems since the switch. With the heat we've had in FL lately I fill my aero bottle with water and my two down tube bottles are filled with concentrated Infinit. I either start off carrying an extra water bottle or two in my rear bike shirt pockets or stop at a convenience store for refills along the route.

Ok I just got the 2 chamber aero bottle with the octigonal covers in place of the iky yellow shower sponge and am very happy with it.  They really do not splash at all unless you are going over cattleguards regularly, otherwise no splashing.  They fill very easy on the bike so no worries about that.  However, the straw of the aero bottle is a problem for me on bumpy roads so I added the $5 camelback big bite valve.   This keeps you from getting jacked in the mouth on bumps and prevents water splashing out the straw as well.  I put my nutrition (infinit) in one chamber and my water in the other chamber.

You probably want at least one bottle holder on your downtube so you can juggle picking up and tossing the bottles as you go on the course.

I also have a neverreach on the back, but then I can go for 100 mile bike ride without passing a single store, rest area or house and need the 140+ ounces when it is hot.

For a cool HIM I can get by with just what is int he double chamber aero bottle, if it is hot, I need more than that for sure.

I switched to the shower poof last week and there is ZERO splash, even on pothole ridden roads! My front brakes were totally loaded with Gatorade and weren't working properly so that problem is now solved.

I have the aero bottle and one bottle on the frame that I primarily use for races. However, at my HIM they ran out of fluids so I was way short and wished I had carried more. Plus I'm doing 100+ mile training rides so I added two rear seat cages on an Xlab Sonic Wing and they work great. I can carry enough fluid for a 4 hour ride if I absolutely have to but I usually plan rides with a refill stop as well.

For gels I use a flask, it holds he equivalent of 4 and then I carry two caffeinated gel packets. I keep the flask and one gel in a small bento and put the other gel in my jersey. That's all I need for a whole day on the bike (I drink Gatorade Endurance, no water).
