I am so upset!! I was really looking forward to this race. I had heard so many great things and was super excited for this to be my first full marathon. I am gearing up for a training plan that peaks the weekend of May 2nd. Are there any other Southern Ontario marathons that weekend - preferably a smaller race with a more community feel to it??

I guess Ottawa will be my fall-back plan.

What about Sudbury Rocks? Anyone know anything about this race?

There's always the Flying Pig in Cincinnati... looks about the same size as Ottawa and it's quite a bit closer (4hr drive). I'll be doing this one and it's on the same day too. Really nice course, but hilly!

GL finding one!

Mississauga is a week later - I've done the half there and it was a good course, lots of support, etc.  The Ottawa one is three weeks later, I've done the half there twice, once when it was on mothers day and once when it was on memorial day (which I believe is when it always is now).  The weather that weekend always seems to be HOT and IMO, I don't want to be running 42 km in the blazing sun.  I would go for flying pig or mississauga.  Both are a heck of a lot closer, and two weeks at that time of year makes a big difference.

That really is unfortunate about Forest City; did they give a reason?

The web site lists "several years of declining participation and increasing logistical requirements" as the reasons for cancelling.   There were only 202 runners in the marathon last year.

The second loop of the marathon looked really lonely last year. I walked the 5k with my mom (for Mother's Day) and my sister ran the hafl. The remaining marathoners maybe got a lane of some roads as traffic screamed by.

Mississauga would be a good option. It's smaller than Ottawa.  It has a nice finish area by the lake. I've never done this one but know lots of people who've done the full and the half and they like it.

Ottawa is Canada's mega race.  3-4000 in the full and around 10,000 in the half.  I've run the full once and the half twice. The good thing about the full is that it starts early. Two of the three times i was there it was hot for running.  In 2008 when i did the full most of th half-ers were complaining about the heat but we started at 7am so by the time the heat was really creeping up i was almost done and that's all i cared about! Ottawa race weekend is always good though. Have enjoyed going up to spend the weekend there each time i did it.

Oooh, I would love to do the Flying Pig one day ... sounds like fun! It's a little further for me.

Take a look at the Martian Marathon...it is April 10th. I ran it last year and it is a flat and fast course. Great event, only 60 bucks!

I'm doing the half marathon this year in London.  I'm looking forward to it.   Originally I was planning on doing the full but like everyone else I was disappointed that they did away with it.

The Flying Pig was my VERY first marathon and it was a great experience.  It does have a few rolling hills but overall it's a fast course!

Waterloo has a marathon on April 25th, it's a small event.

So...what's the half marathon course like for the London Forest City race?  Hilly? Flat?  Rolling?

Yeah it's too bad they cancelled the full. Being from London we train on the majority of the course on the bike paths through the parks. The 1/2 course is through the city for the most part, a few small rolling hills but pretty flat. Weather's usually perfect this time of year too!
