Comments: The waves were smaller than Saturday, but there were still 3 footers on occasion, so you just hoped the sets weren't 4 minutes apart :) Wasn't sure where to start myself, so what the hell, get in front, near the far edge. As it turned out, that was directly in front of the buoy. Miss Teen Tourism (yes, really) blew the horn and off we went. Not too much surf to deal with, but my entrance was not speedy. I was about tenth to the water, by virtue of being in front, and went straight thru the surf. Some started swimming when it was still shallow, I decided to wade a little longer. At the first buoy, I was about the fourth green cap. There was a kid in my wave, about 12 years old, in just a green speedo, at the turn, and we paced eachother the whole way. The kid was a good swimmer. He helped me sight as he was to my right and I am a right breather. I stayed about 5 feet from him, we bumped occasionally, but he was my rabbit (and I knew he warn't no clydesdale) :) I couldn't see the second buoy, but could see lots of pink and yellow caps, and the lifeguards on surfboards and kayaks, so used them as well. Passed a LOT of people in earlier waves. At least I get to pass somewhere ;) From shore, the second buoy looked a long way off, but it came pretty quickly. The kid and I were neck and neck, I had to go inside a yellow cap, he went outside. We jostled a bit at the buoy. He took a shoreward line toward buoy 3, I had NO friggin clue where it wasm I just followed the caps -- but I could see the rabbit, e was falling behind me, about 10 yards to the right. I think my line was better, cuz before I knew it he was drafting me. OK, that's cool.... Until we hit another group of yellowheads just before the last buoy. I went around left, he went right, slid right by me and took off to shore. Good showing, and I learned a lot from the kid. I stood up in waist deep water, too soon, the rabbit was up and running. Getting out fo the water is HARD!! Had to run uphill in the sand about 200 yards, took my cap and goggles off. Then across the bike path and up a flight of steps. Wetsuit was coming off slowly, arm by arm. Another 50 yards uphill to the T1 timing mat........ As I passed, friend said you were first out of the water in your group!! I shook my head no and held up four fingers. I was wrong, they weren't clydes :) What would you do differently?: Overall, very happy with my time and performance, couldn't have placed better :) Still 3 minutes off overall winner's time, so there is still room for some improvement. I lost the time running into the water, and exiting. Got up too soon, and didn't run enough. But I was out of breath, not from the swim, but just geting out of the darn water ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Generally happy considering it was my first one ever. Felt slow and methodical, but time wasn't too bad. I can see where I could save time though. Was another 100 yards uphill to the bike. Got to bike, suit down to ankles, grabbed jersey and put it on, wasn't hard at all, as everyone here had described. As I was bending down grabbed helmet and put it on as I stepped on suit to get it off feet. Stepped into shoes, velcro, grab bike, and I was off..... Was 12/27 What would you do differently?: Practice more to get quicker. Wear tri top under wetsuit. Technique was fine, just speed. Friend told me I didn't looked panicky, just all business. ![]() Bike
Comments: Clipped in a little slow. Man, felt like I could just never catch my breath and hammer it (heard that from someone else too). Missed my goal mph (18) slightly, but..... At one point, I pass this kid in tennies on a mountain bike, then he comes up beside and in front. No friggin way, at least he's motivation, so I pass him. Saw my buddy running back after shredding a tire. Ran 1/4 of the bike course and still beat my time :^ At the downhill turn around, I hit 34 mph. At the top, the left lane is to get marked for the second lap, the right lane is to go to T2. Only problem is: Sign says: "Lap 1 Right, Lap 2 Left" with correspondingly incorrect arrows. I was tired and confused. Started to go right... wait a minute, have to go left... go through the cones.. "Lap 1?" the volunteer asks... " i have to mark you" "Yes... I mean, no, Uh, don't touch me...." Screw the marking, I don't need a mark to do lap 2..... Up the hill the second time, crummy way to go into T2, hammering up a hill. We had practiced lines and shifting the day before, and I just screwed it all up today. I also didn't combine drinking and riding very well. What would you do differently?: Work harder. Ride more. Get aero bars. Ride more. Ride more. Ride more. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Was 20/27 in T2. It didn't look like there were very many bikes when I got there, but I didn't really take note....Overallm happy with the time. Do't really remember much of T1 or T2, everything just felt like it fell into place. Helmet off, shoes off, sat down to put on socks and shoes. Got up and shuffled out of T2. Did not start real running. Couldn't. Guess that's what they mean by it feeling weird off the bike What would you do differently?: speedlaces, move faster, experiment running without socks ![]() Run
Comments: Well, other than slow..... I did pass two people though, one of whom pased me back. I just felt like couldn't switch gears. I tried matching the cadence of those that passed me... I tried longer strides.... At the end, I got a little energy coming to the finish, but I didn't feel like I did at the end of my 5K last February, like I gave it ALL I took two walking steps at the second water station just so I could drink the water without wearing it. What would you do differently?: Run more, lots more. Brick more, lots more Leave more on the course ![]() Post race
Warm down: little stretching, walking around, eat a little - they had a nice buffet -- drank some, talked with friends, watch my swim coach take the overall 1st place award :) :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough running and biking. Too much weight Event comments: There were some snafus, but WTF, I had a BLAST. My wife and her friend (who does tris and dus) were there, and had silly signs, and everytime I ran or rode by they'd scream their head off. I had a Sh** eating grin 90% of the race. Definitely will do it next year! Last updated: 2005-01-14 12:00 AM

I had done ins and outs at the swim course the day before, and there were good 3-4 footers. I checked the surf report Sat. night and it said 8-10 footers.... Oh Great.... Either they force us into high surf and we get killed, or tHey turn it into a duathlon... hmmmmm... not sure which was worse.
Woke up at 5, left at 5:30 for the 10 minute drive :) Drove along part of the bike course and saw the small surf. Phew! Was going to be a good day. Getting STOKED!!!
Ate PB and honey sandwich on whole grain and a clif bar, hard to choke down with my nervous dry mouth. Gatorade and water, fixed that.
Was first to show up in my wave, so I picked a nice spot right on the end of the rack, plenty of room
Intended to ride one loop of the course, but never made it, too much walking around, nervousness, talking to friends, looking at swim course, nervousness, getting body marked (how cool!) nervousness.
Did a few barefoot strides across the park. Got suited up, got in the water and swam 4-5 25 stroke warmups, got out and waited
This is the first year for this race. The RD gave a talk, explaining why the buoys weren't set up yet (it was 7:15, first wave at 7:30....), and why the course water people hadn't arrived yet..... Heard some people bitching, but sice it was my first, so what?
