It's very foreign to our culture, where people marry for love, generally. My limited understanding of the attitudes towards marriage in the rural parts of India lead me to believe that, at 30, it was unlikely that she would ever marry. Especially considering her "illness" whatever that was/is. For many people there, marriage is a contract that insures the protection of the woman. Being unmarried is to be left very vulnerable. When it says she marries the snake, it's much like nuns who marry "Christ". Naturally, it's only ceremonial, but it has cultural signifigance. |
