Subject: Greetings From Arkansas
Hi Folks,

Just signed up today. I am 45 and I am trying to get back in shape. Famous last words huh ?

I have Type II Diabeties. I was diagnosed two and a half years ago. I have failed at keeping my blood sugar levels low. I know exercise is my last resort.

Before my doctor left for Iraq, he put me on a teadmill and checked my heart. He said I could handle exercise and go for it. So here I am.

I got my old Schwinn out of mothballs. I bought it back in 1983, but it is still usable. I gave the old 12 speed a tune up. I have ridden about three times this week and it seems to work just fine.

I am going to start the basic run/bike thing today. So wish me luck and I am interested in reading the other posts that you folks place on here.

Thanks
Vance

Welcome Vance!  Good luck in your training!  With wt. loss, type II diabetes usually improves (it improves your insulin resistance) - best of luck - it will be great to get those blood sugars under control!

Greetings, Vance!

Where in Arkansas??? I was born in Jonesboro, but grew up in Little Rock. I moved away at 18 (which wasn't exactly yesterday -more like 1976) and have hardly been back -but I remember it fondly.

HEy...go figure, I have type II also. You are exactly right about the exercise, it's better than using insulin. I am new to triathlons but have done several adventure races. The swimming thing is really a limiter for me but I am improving. What sort of meds are you taking? Are you on insulin?

Vance,
I was on Regular (short acting) insulin for awhile, but due to the excercise and losing 50 pounds I was taken off the insulin. I only take glucophage and glipizide now. One word of advice form one person with diabetes to another, test often while excersing. I test once before and then once an hour during longer sessions. I also found that there is a pretty slim window with my blood glucose and performance. I do really well when my sugar is between 100 and 130, of course that is just me, experiment on your own. Don't forget to take food with you while working out, especially on the long slow ones. I usually carry some gluco tabs with me, they are fast acting and taste ok. Let me know how you are doing. Have you started training in earnest yet?

Stephan

Stephan,

Glad to hear about that 100 to 130 window. When my blood sugar gets below 100 or 90, I start to get shakey.

I strated my training program tonight. I am following the one where you walk just 10 min to start. Took the wife and the dogs with me. I know it doesn't seem like much, but I know it all build on itself.

You coming off your insulin is great news. I hope the same happens for me. I am sick of all this medicine.
