This seems like a great deal.

If nothing else, it will take some of the pressure off of some of the other races in the West. (IMAZ, IMCdA) and balance the map out a bit.

If I happen to get skunked out of an IMAZ slot for 09, this might be a good option assuming they can put it all together in time

I thought there was a big discussion of this (June 08 publication date on the article) and the consensus was that the lake is too small to accomodate 2000+ athletes plus family etc etc.  Maybe it was on that other board

Hmmm....so if they don't decide for another 6 weeks....then I'd have to delay my decision on IMKY 2009....risking is selling out.  Darn.  I wish they make a decision sooner.

The article was written on 6/24/08, so 6 weeks is today.

Yeah, old article.

The article states Bend and Eugene as other possible locations.  I remember seeing somewhere that Bend was ruled out and maybe/not sure Eugene was as well.

There is no confirmation on this event but their application is being reviewed.

That was the other board. I disagree that the lake is too small. A 2 loop course could be set up without any problems. However there are logistic issues. There's very limited parking, and that would be overtaken by the transition area. Athletes and spectators would have to be bused in.

Unlike other North America IM's, there's no accommodations at the swim venue. The two places that have been mentioned as possible T2/Finish areas are Pacific University and Nike's HQ. There's really no accommodations within walking distance of either of these locations either. Lots of places to stay near there, just not within walking distance as is the case at other races.

I would love to see it come to fruition, as it would be great to have a race in my backyard.

Not that it makes a difference, but WTC currently owns the domain names ironmanoregon. com and ironmanlasvegas. com

I should have been clearer... the "lake area and surrounds" is too small, although I would wonder what the athletes' families would be doing in  the lake.....

Yes they have tried to buy Silverman but Frank (the RD) will not sell it.

I hope that they don't spoil Silverman... they need to keep out of Vegas.

Any ideas on the bike route for this?  That is, will it likely have some serious hills?  I'm not familiar with this area.

Where would this  be annouced once a decision is made?  ironman.com?

Actually there was a discussion here (though it wasn't all that "big":
