Subject: 2:50+ Oly -- finish Ironman?
I was curious to know if any BTers with a 2 hr 50 min or greater Oly personal best had finished an Ironman distance? If so, any thoughts on the experience?

Thanks.

My Oly times are around 2:50 and my speed was not a factor in completing an Ironman. Put in the required training volume and you will be fine.

X2.  I go around 2:45 for an Olympic and it had no impact on my Ironman time.

Watch me in 2 weeks!

What I will say is I've done far more training for the IM than I did for the OLY's.

I bonked on my first ever Oly and pulled off a 2:50 ish.  11 months later, I did 12:34 at IM CDA.  It is possible.

I was really pretty happy with my 2:46 first Oly last summer and will be doing my first IM in 7 weeks.  I won't be finishing in 12:xx:xx, but I sure do plan on finishing.  My IM pace will not be up to what that Oly pace was, I can tell you that.  A first IM is probably not so much about uber speed as about getting sufficient training in to complete it at a steady pace within your abilities.  In any case 8/1/09 is coming up fast.  Hopefully my HIM this Saturday is improved over last year's first HIM with the IM training this year.

ME!!!!! My olympic was 3:30 or something, ahhhh!!! My half PR before IM was 7:48 ( ca 70.3) but I finished IM in 14:39, which I was stoked about!! LOVED it!!! I was crying on the run, I couldn't believe I was almost done with an Ironman. What journey.

First oly was 2:56 March 27 2008. Did full Vineman on Aug 2 2008 in 13:16.
Also did a 2:19 oly later same yr. Go for it!!
Don't worry about a first oly time. Could have been a tough course or a bad day or just that you were a tri virgin and your body didn't know what to expect.

Sure you can, IF you train for an Ironman.
The difference in training between and olympic and an Ironman is significant. I was doing olympic distances in training during my IM training. Not at race pace, but the training volume is huge.

My only Olympic was 3 hrs and I finished IMLP in 14:46. Had I not held back so much on the bike, I probly would have finshed in the low to mid 13 hr. range.

My fastest Oly was 3:06 and my slowest was 3:58 and I finished CDA 2x in 16:22 and 15:48.

It's all about the training

As everyone else said....it's all about the training.  Put in the time and you can finish.

I think it all depends what you are training for.  I have been training for an IM and did basically the same time you did in an Olympic this last weekend.  I know for me, I did it with the purpose of testing my pacing and gauging how I felt.  I didn't go out and try to run the fastest Olympic that I could.  If you have trained for an IM then I think you will be fine and honestly your time for the Olympic is almost irrelevant (barring the obvious problems such as not finishing).
