Emergency Personnel look for ICE in your cell phones

A campaign encouraging people to enter an emergency contact number in their
mobile phone's memory under the heading "ICE" (for "In Case of Emergency"),
has rapidly spread throughout the world as a particular consequence of last
week's terrorist attacks in London. Originally established as a nation-wide
campaign in the UK, ICE allows paramedics or police to be able to contact a
designated relative / next-of-kin in an emergency situation.

The idea is the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service paramedic Bob
Brotchie and was launched in May this year. Bob, 41, who has been a
paramedic for 13 years, said: "I was reflecting on some of the calls I've
attended at the roadside where I had to look through the mobile phone
contacts struggling for information on a shocked or injured person.

Almost everyone carries a mobile phone now, and with ICE we'd know immediately who
to contact and what number to ring. The person may even know of their
medical history."

By adopting the ICE advice, your mobile will help the rescue services
quickly contact a friend or relative - which could be vital in a life or
death situation. It only takes a few seconds to do, and it could easily help
save your life.

Why not put ICE in your phone now?

Simply select a new contact in your phone book, enter the word 'ICE' and the
number of the person you wish to be contacted. For more than one
contact
name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do, and please pass this
on.......it may save a life.

Very good idea, actually. My piece of crap phone won't let me make two entries for the same number. So I'll have to change the name on my wife's entry to ICE.

Wouldn't "home" be just as good?  ICE sounds good, but I think they have to do a lot more public awareness before it gets used.  I bet if you asked EMT's today what ICE ment on a cell phone, you wouldn't get many correct answers.  However, "Home" or "wife" or something similar would be much easier identified.

I have home,  ICE would not work due to the language issue here in Quebec.

Unique case I guess

I'm using a Blackberry, the entry is EMERGENCY URGENCE ICE. This should cover all the bases. I also included 4 contact numbers.

Thanks, that's a good idea.  I have typically carried a small card in my seat bag with my I.D. and contact info.  I now will also update my phone.

Great idea, I am a firefighter/paramedic and when I have an unconscious patient or someone who is out of their mind I usually look for a cell phone and look for a contact. It has come in handy more than once.

If you normally program numbers in as 10-digit (i.e. 800-555-1212) you could try programming your ICE numbers as 1-800-555-1212 and it might accept it.  It worked in mine.

I do not have a cell phone but I always carry ID.  Maybe I should add the I.C.E. message in my wallet!

I"ve always wondered how that works.  Is only a certain person (ie, Lieutenant) allowed to do that searching through personal items stuff?  A friend of mine (yes, a LT) tells me he goes to medicine cabinets and kitchen cabinets and the like looking for meds.

With so many different cell phones on the market these days, can they figure out how to work them to pull up that stuff?   I just got mine this year.  Yeah, I know......
