Subject: Dreams...anyone do analysis?
Last night I had a dream about a helicopter crash.  I watched it happen--it went upside down and basically slowly fell onto the rotor.  Man and a woman on board, minor injuries.  They were familiar to me, but I didn't 'know' them.  Like they were celebrities or something.  When I got to them, I said 'you again?'.  I had witnessed them crash in a different helicopter some time ago.  (At first I thought I had had this dream before, but I think it was in my dream).  Same thing, slow crash, minor injuries.  Both crashes seemed to happen near my old home (not sure how I know this, because the neighborhood was different in my dream).  Sooooooo, what does it mean?

It means you have unresolved Oedipal issues - the man and the woman are obviously your parents, which is why you know them but don't "know" them, and respond to them with "you again?". The helicopter being upside down is the position of an unborn child, which represents you. You have projected your parents into the womb (think about the helicopter cockpit - small cramped space, hard to hear things on the outside, rocking motion as it moves....), so that they can be with you; or possibly so you can now be the parent. The rotors represent your fears of castration - fears you have because you are being "bad" by causing the harm to your parents and therefore expect to be punished. The crashes happen near your old home - fairly obviously showing you want to return to a prior self - i.e. your youth. Your ambivalence about your Oedipal issues is why they are only suffering minor injuries.

I trained with a lot of psychodynamic psychiatrists, so I can spin this nonsense off easily. In reality, there are no deep hidden universal meanings in dreams. They consistent of a couple of things - daytime residue (things that happen during the day that float up in your thoughts at bedtime or during REM sleep), and sometimes elements of your environment (e.g. I once had an early morning dream while the radio was talking about the launch of the first space shuttle - so I was on the shuttle, orbiting the earth).

When the analysts and dynamic psychiatrists do dream analysis, it basically consists of asking you to recount the dream and then asking you (sometimes in a guided fashion) about the associations you have to the things in the dream - e.g. "who do the people remind you of? What do you think of when you think about 'helicopters'? What feelings do you have as the crash occurs? When else did you have those feelings?" and so on. Whether or not those associations actually have some portent or meaning is debatable.

I had two reoccuring dreams my whole life. I never understood them. Later in life I sort of had a light bulb moment and realized what they were. I never had them again after I figured them out. I won't bore you with details other than to say they would be boring to you, but they were just personal to me.

Other than that, I have never put any stock in any meaning to all the weird crap that goes through my head when I sleep.

Yes - it means you have some gender identity confusion. The donuts, being round, with a big opening are clearly representative of a female. Likely pregnant, as they are being chased by pickles, and as we all know, pregnant women have unusual food cravings, like the sour pickle/sweet donut combination. You clearly wish to be pregnant yourself, therefore, but of course, as a male, you cannot become pregnant, and so, symbolically, your dream makes it so.

I too have a few re-occurring dreams. But I know exactly what they mean and why I have them.

One is plane crashes - I work in aviation, my dad is a hobby pilot, I'm terrified of them crashing and being helpless to stop it. I almost always watch the plane crash from a distance. Only once was I actually in the plane.

The other is about my mother and my inability to help her as she is having a diabetic episode. I can point to a series of (too many) real-life experiences in which I literally saved her life during an episode or was part of one in the middle of the night or while she was driving, and I'm terrified of the worst happening.

Who needs shrinks?

Hhuu... wow Brian. You probably want to refrain from putting stuff like that out on the web from now on.

While I haven't had many recurring dreams, and really don't remember many of them at all, there was a series of three dreams I had over 2 nights that really struck me...

The first, I was on a rocky mountain, but "rocky" more in line with the cliffs around Moab, UT, than Cascades. Anyway, a large group of people there on that mountain, and it seems like I know them all. The top of the mountain has a gentle slope that leads to a sheer drop-off. For some reason I fall off the cliff. I land in the back of a pick-up truck that has a number of open tool boxes in the bed, which cut me into several pieces. I am looking down at myself (like I turn my head to look at myself) and see that I am now in about 8 pieces.

The second, the same night, I'm back on top of the mountain, I'm naked (no, it's not a sexual thing), but I can't say whether others are or not, but it doesn't seem out of place that I'm naked. Anyway, I am talking to people about how I died from falling off the mountain...

Next night, another dream. I'm meeting up with two people I haven't seen in over 25 years. In the dream they're a couple, though they never actually have been. I'm meeting them so they can show me a plot of land they're wanting to buy. We start walking around, and as we near a gentle downward slope, I freak out, drop down to my hands and feet, and I'm back-pedaling (like crab-walking) away from the slope.

Strange...

Ah, now it's clear. Thank you. All these years I thought of myself as the pickle, not the donut

heh heh, good answer   I believe that dreams do 'mean' something, but as someone else said, it is very personal.  I usually don't remember them unless they are significant.  Since I woke up feeling as though I had dreamed (dreamt?) this before, even more so.

Deja vu is usually a glitch in the matrix!

Or your brain short-circuited with memory and thinks it is replaying a thought that was the dream.
