OMG I'm so glad I got tested. (I'm sure there's a joke in that somewhere)

I don't know if it's bragging to post my numbers or not, so I'll save 'em for my training plan, but I have such a clear idea of what I need to do now and how I am going to reach my goals.

If you haven't been tested, I strongly recommend it. (I'm guessing a similar joke in there)

So what's the testing protocol for a phantom?

I think you hired some actor to pretend to be you for a few hours. And we still haven't seen that mystery bike (scoooobyyy doooobbbyyy dooooo) of yours.

But I will say that I have heard that the VO2 Max test can be a helpfull tool. Especially for weight loss.

When will we see you on two wheels?

Where did you go?  Or did you do it yourself?  Costs and do they do it for the swim bike and run separately?

I'm guessing Nick at Durapulse. IIRC when I asked about it, it was around $100 for the test.

Yeah, nick did the testing.

The rmr was $100 and the VO2 was 150. I did them at the same time.

The Vo2 test only sucks at the end, when you're sprinting at like a 10% incline (or felt like it) with a mask on your face that doesn't seem to want you to have enough oxygen).

Another benefit of getting tested and finding your Vo2 max is accurately determining your training heart rate zones, pace zones for the run and power zones on the bike.  If you are an Ironman athlete you may also want to ask for calories burned per minute at each heart rate zone which is critical when determining how much re-fueling you will need to do during your race.

You can get these tests for FREE.

The ASU Kinesiology department has started a new study that's focusing on optimal training methods.  They are looking for lab rats.  The first step is to go in and get a bunch of these tests.  They will use these tests to determine if you qualify for their study.  But, whether you qualify or not, or whether you want to take part in the second phase or not, you will still get all of these tests for free.

Here are some of the tests they do...
- V02 max
- max heart rate and lactate threshold
- DXA scan for a true body fat measurement
- Wingate Test to determine your maximum power output

They'll also take some blood, check your cortisol levels, give you a stress test, etc.  If this sounds interesting, go to http://kinesiology.clas.asu.edu/estudy to read more about their study.

I have done 2/3s of the testing.  I do the Wingate on Thursday.  The stress test was not much fun, but the rest was.  The folks running the tests are really nice.

I just got off of the phone with Nick and I am scheduled for the first test on May 14.  Great information.. They are also looking for some pencil pusher types in the 18-40 year age group for this study if you you know of any folks who want to be test subjects.

Phooey - the study is for MEN only.

I've been meaning to get VO2 max done, but never seem to schedule the time.

BTW, you can also get it done at Lifetime Fitness and at Camelback Coaching (ask Dean about the Camelback Coaching test - he did his there).

The reason it's for men only is the actual study is for the military special warfare. Which is generally men only. (Which I think is stupid, I've met some hardcore chicks who could have easily been seals)

ETA: I didn't ask but obviously the only reason I'm interested in donating my body to science is to get my VO2Max, max heart rate, lactate threshold, body fat and power output. I'm sure they're not going to tell us what our heart rate zones are based on VO2Max but how easy is it to determine what they are once you know your VO2Max?

Anyways, this sounds prettty cool!

I tried to call and as I was leaving a message I forgot all of my contact numbers. They are going to think that I am slow (in the head).

So I left an email. Hopefully I can still get in.
