Subject: No water on the bike?

The Mayflower Triathlon and Iron Distance Triathlon at plymouth Rock next weekend announced today that they won't be offering regular water on the bike portion of the races, rather they'll be giving out Glaceau "Smart Water" as well as Gatorade.
I'll double checked with the RD and there is definitely no 'regular' water being offered anywhere on the bike course.

A couple questions.

1. Has anyone ever heard of a race doing this before?

2. Am I the only one completely put off by this? I train with water, I wouldn't want the extra electrolytes, I get them from my nutrition plan.

Talk about corporate piracy! I'm with you. water should be the first option.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there's much in the way of electrolytes in "Smart Water". Maybe marginally more sodium/potassium then you'd get from tap water, but it's not like drinking propel or anything like that. It seems like a waste of plastic, but I don't think you need to worry about it nutritionally.

Maybe the only "smart" part of the water is the marketing department who got a race director to use it and people to think its significantly better than real "water"

Ever wonder what our grandparents would say (okay I'm old so mine aren't living) about the prices we pay for water and coffee?

Just thoughts to ponder on a Friday night!  I need a life.

i'm actually not doing the race, my brother's bachelor party came into conflict.

Still, i think it's ridiculous you can't just get some normal water on a race course.

I'm doing the IM as the biker in a relay.

I'll need to figure how this effects my strategy as I was going to add nuuns to water but it might taste yucky to mix flavors and I get lots of electrolytes from Nuuns.

Smart Water is just regular, unflavored water with an unspecified amount of electrolytes so I doubt you'll get enough from it to mess with your nutrition plan and the flavors wont be affected.

I still wonder if anyone has heard of another race making such a change.

dont worry about it... I drink "smart Water" everyday and there is no difference in taste AT ALL from drinking any other bottled water. The reason I drink it??? You can get great deals on it at Kroger; usually 10 for $10.... But it taste the same and I doubt there is enough sodium or anything else to over load you if you mix it with Nuuns or anything. I use it in my infinit mix and have never had a problem.

Dont let the label scare you... It is no different and would be like Fiji or Dasani were the water sponsers.

No expert but I wouldn't worry about it.  The whole "smart" water thing is probably just a gimmick to make people think their bottled water is better than the other people bottled water which they think is better than tap water when in actuality it is just tap water.  IMO, bottled water is crazy except that it can be convient.  I mean, for those of you that don't realize it Evian water spelled backwards is Naive.  Most of the water I drink comes from the faucet of my house.

Ok, I'm gonna play the pro-green d-bag... DRINK TAP WATER! Bottled water is incredibly horrible for the environment and absolutely unnecessary here in the US. Some nations have tap water poor enough that there is a real difference, but that's not the case here in the US. I could all but guarantee you can't taste the difference. Especially since most bottled water is bottled locally after coming right out of the tap.

Paying a buck a bottle for something you can get out of the tap at home for free is the very definition of insanity.

All well and good, and if you want to do that, bring your own.  Otherwise, RDs have to survive with sponsors, and smart water is providing the water to the race for free (at least at most races, water provided is from the water sponsor)  Getting tap water to the race locations is simply unworkable.

So to be truly green you'll have to bring your own and arrange for it to be available or carry it, or don't do tris.
