What would be a "ball park" time for a 400 yrd. swim, 13 mi. bike, 3 mi. run for a first time Tri. I'm 54 and have 6 months to train. I'm already working out on weight training, some swimming and average about 15 mi. rides twice a week on the bike. I averaged 70 mi. a week last year just doing the bike. I'll start my running in June. By September I should weigh in around 185 (from 210).

Bike - strong
swim - very weak
run - average

Every little bit of information is helpful!

All your terms are relative, here's my interpretation, attempt at quantifying your descriptions:

swim - very weak, 3 minutes per 100yds = 12 minutes

Bike - strong , 26 mph =30 minutes

run - average, 8 minutes/mile=24 minutes

Throw in 4 minutes for transitions, one hour, ten minutes.

Pull up the website for your upcoming tri, and look at last year's results for your age group. That should give you some idea of where the times shake out.

Not being 54 or knowing the type of course it's tough to say, maybe splits of 8:30, 39:00, and 28:50 not counting transitions would be my unqualifed guess? But I did want to say nice job dropping the 25 lbs, I know that's tough.

Why does it matter? Just do the best you can and have fun. Then on your second tri you can try to do better than you did on your first.

While I have expectations for my races they are based on my own training and ability not on someone else's subjective view of what I should be able to do. I find this leads to more appropriate goals (generally harder than others would set for me but that is a whole other story). Just my thoughts.

Thanks, this type of information helps in establishing some goals. I know some say it should be for fun, but I started all this to challenage myself and my age. I used to run 10k races, so I know how to judge my limitations.

My first challenage was making a committment. My next challenage is to stick with it. My 3rd is to train smart and pace myself. My 4th will be to do my best in my first Tri. My ongoing challenage is to keep doing it!

I have seen too many people my age dropping dead of heart attacks due to poor health. I look around and see middle age businessmen who can't see their belts.

I want to be the exception and not the rule!

50 & FIt!

Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!

OK, I'm bored, so I went look up the results for your tri (Old Hickory Lake) from last year.

Kind of a weird tri s/r/b/r:

400 Yard Open Water Swim / 1.5 Mile Road Run / 13 Mile Road Bike / 1.5 Mile Road Run

Five finishers in your age group, fastest was 1:10, slowest was 1:19.

Dude that finished third in your group had these splits:

8:25/14:19/41:46/12:07

I see run and bike times being given here that look about right for average age-groupers, on an average course, age not really a factor, usual sort of training time what with living a normal life, etc. But swim times? If you can run and bike as fast as you can, many of you are needing to get the swim times way down. A swim that short should allow you to swim 1:30-1:45 per 100yd. You can easily go from taking 20 minutes for 400yds to taking 8 or less in 6 months of training. At this distance fitness won't be the limiting factor, technique will. Transitions should be :45 to 1:00 each, unless there is a long run to T1. Bike and run should be the times you have questions about, based on fitness, the other stuff should be a gimme. make it so.

I'm shocked by the numbers that have been thrown around as what is a respectable time for a first tri. 26mph on the bike, 13 miles in 30 mins? An 8 min 400 yards? The question was what is a respectable time for a FIRST tri. The times thrown out here seem unbelievable for a first timer. (Remember bigred is 54 yoa and currently 210 pounds) I checked some results form 2004 in FLA. I found one race with a 13 mi bike leg, it was in St. Augustine. The fastest bike time was posted by a male in the 30-35 age group it was 34:34 for the 13 mi. I then checked a race in Hendersonville Tn that had a 4oo yard swim. Yes there were plenty of times under 9 mins, but there were also a fair share of times around 10 and 11 mins.

What I'm doing for my first tri, which is in a month, is not focussing on time, rather focusing on being able to complete the distances. I'm competeing against myslef and no one else. For my second tri I will be more concerned about time, and then only to the extent that I want to progress.
Bigred- don't worry about anyone elses time, or what is repsectable. For your first tri a finish is special. Measure your own progress from where you started to where you are now, to where you will be after your first, then second, then third tri. Don't worry if you're not doing a 26 mph bike leg or an 8 min swim leg. Do your best and have fun.

The guy said he was "Strong" on the bike. If he's giving subjective terms like that, they're open to interpretation. To me, "Strong" on the bike is 26mph.

Plus, it made the math easy!

In my opinion.. The first tri should not even be about time.  It is a real learning experience to say the least.  Completion is the only thing that should enter..

Once it is over you can look over everything and make the necessary modifications.  The 2nd and 3rd are a good test.
