Subject: Phelps in seven Olympic Trials events; Lochte in 11
Remember when Michael Phelps said he was finished with the 400-meter individual medley, the most grueling event in a swimming meet?

It looks like the two-time defending Olympic 400 IM champion has had a change of heart.

U.S. OLYMPIC SWIM TRIALS
• When: June 25 to July 2
• Where: CenturyLink Center
• TV: Event finals on NBC
The 400 IM is one of seven events Phelps entered for the U.S. Olympic Trials that begin Monday at CenturyLink Center. In six of those events, Phelps could go head-to-head with Ryan Lochte, his friend and chief rival.

Lochte is entered in 11 events but likely won't compete in all of them. It's also doubtful that Phelps will try to make the U.S. team in seven individual events and also swim a leg on all three relay teams.

Some media outlets on Tuesday speculated that Phelps might make a run at double-digit gold medals and try to top his Olympic record of eight set at the 2008 Beijing Games. Meanwhile, no one was projecting 14 golds for Lochte or reminding readers that Phelps entered nine events at the 2008 U.S. Trials in Omaha.

Phelps scratched from three of those events — the 400 freestyle and the 100 and 200 backstrokes — and competed in only the first round of the 100 freestyle to get a mark (47.92 seconds) that would lock in a spot on the 400 freestyle relay team.

I don't think Phelps is going to do the 400 IM or even race in a few of the 7 events he is entered in. I'd guess he picks 5 (100/200 Fly, 200 IM, 100/200 Free) and aims for the 3 relays. Last time at the trials I think he registered for 10 events and only did 5. Finals swimming is just too short to be doing that many events. He'd have days where he'd need to do 3 or 4 races in an hour. That's not conducive to him getting the most gold medals IMO.

I'm rooting for Ariana Kukors an ex teammate of mine. She is amazing.

ETA: I guess I should have read the rest of Tireman's post first.

Sweet, thanks for the link.  I'll be cheering on the 19 Curl-Burke swimmers who qualified for the trials.

You can't escape what you are good at.  And the minute you try to take the easy road, 4 people will beat you to it.

My daughter swims against Racheal Bootsma (one of the 5 to watch in Omaha) in both high school and club swimming. Bootsma's 100 backstroke is something to see, let me tell you.

Good luck to all the athletes!!

My PR 50 meters (starting in the water) is 32 seconds.  lol, I don't think I'm going to make the team this year.

I'm actually excited to go to the trials this year.  Back in 2008 I had no interest or desire because I was too busy holding my couch down.

On a local note, parking should be interesting because they College World Series and the Swim trials are right next to each other and share the same parking lots...

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MISSY!!!!

I have followed local girl Missy Franklin for years (since she was "just" an age grouper.) I was hoping to be there and in London to (hopefully) cheer her on but alas it will not be happening so I will be cheering from Colorado.

Two swimmers from our area (whom our boys swam with and one they considered a friend) are going to be there!  Hope they enjoy this opportunity.  Look for Matt Elliott and Jake Quercigrossa.
