Glad you worked something out- it's unethical and not right to use someone's else race number for a triathlon.  Not only do you have present a photo id at packet pick up, but if something happened to you during a race they would not be able to have the proper emergency information if you were under someone else's identity.  Also, since the swim caps are colored accoding to sex and AG it would be hard not to stick out if you got a number for a male in the 50-55 AG if you were a female in the 20-24 AG or vice versa- just an example.

BTW

The event allows a transfer of race numbers.

Unfortunately the date for that has already passed so I would not have been able to do it.

Well the original post wasn't clear and that tid bit of pertinant information wasn't included.  There's a big difference between selling a BIB number and transferring a BIB #.  From the original post, nothing was mentioned about transferring a BIB.  Sorry- but I can only offer advice on the given information.

Janelle's comments were reasonable. Banditing in triathlon is a Bad Thing, and since so very few races allow transfers it's a fair assumption that it isn't allowed, especially since "transfer" wasn't mentioned in the OP.

Being new to the racing world I would not have assumed that transferring of numbers was not common practice.  In fact I would have thought that it was allowed in most races.  For me not to have said the word transfer in the original post was an oversight on my part. The points made to back up the “unethical” nature of the request are in fact flawed.  Her points merely go to show that it might be unsafe.  If you want good reasons for why it might be considered unethical try these.  If I were to win in an age group that I really did not belong then the rightful winner of that age group would have not gotten their just reward.  If I were to race for someone so that they got a better time and there by making them appear to be better say for instance a Boston qualifier.  Word choice is the problem here.  What I did was not by any means unethical and to be called out on that without any real knowledge of the facts was a “Bad Thing”.  This was not meant to turn into a discussion I only wanted to get a chance to participate in the race.  I asked if someone wanted to sell the number because they paid for it and I did not expect any of you nice people to just give it away.

Point taken, but to me, it's bad first and foremost because if you're in a serious accident in a race, your family wouldn't be notified and somebody else's would (because someone else's name would be associated with that number). Also, you wouldn't have signed a waiver which creates havoc for the race director from a liability standpoint.

And since this site attracts lots of beginners who also might not know there are rules (generally) against using someone else's number, it's a teachable moment for other people reading the thread.

Again an assumption is being made that the intention was to circumvent the system.  I agree that it is unsafe and can be unethical to just use someone else’s number.  I do not recommend it at all.  The point of the original post was to see if there was anyone with a number that would not be able to use it.  At that point if there had been then the process of making the arrangements for what was “ethical and not bad” to do would have commenced.   That portion of the transaction would not have concerned anyone except the two people making that transaction.  I also would like to point out that again this would not have been bad and none of the points to that affect would apply if a transfer had been done.  Now if the race does not allow transfers then I would have to agree with the both of you that it would not have been right.  In this case they do.  There are a couple of lessons to be learned here one is that knowledge is key, do not assume anything.  Just because most do does not mean everyone does.  Read the rules and find out for yourself.  The second is if you are going to use strong language then use appropriate points to back it up.

It's teachable without needing to stomp on someone.

Now, since you're all in the same neck of the woods, how about a big group hug.

And welcome to BT Andrew!

Seriously, we're all adults and no one needs to be scolded whatever the situation. Even if the race didn't allow transfers, it's out of line for someone to go off on them about how unethical you think they're being.
Get over yourselves
