Subject: I feel like an idiot.

I have literally been stressing myself out over not being able to get in all my workouts in before work. Upset that I'm not a morning person and can't get up at 5am to do it all. I was putting a ridiculous amount of pressure on myself.

THen i read here - "split the workouts, one in the morning one at night"

DUH. I mean I knew that, but I just felt like a complete failure actually doing it. But for some reason I accepted this fact yesterday. One day I'll be up and at em at 5 am but today was not the day. Tomorrow isn't looking so good either. But until then, I'll split them and be ok with it. I just don't know why I'm having such a hard time dealing with it. It's totally weird, random and irrational.

Maybe you high achievers out there make me feel inadequate.

And then I feel like I'm failing in the nutritional dept. but that's a whole different  thread, subject, disappointment.

I can relate. I also do 5AM workouts but must limit them due to time needed to shower/dress for work. I want to run 4 miles in the AM but usually am only able to do a 5K before it's time to get ready. Then it's super hot until later in the evening, and I am a student so I'm also working to squeeze in studies, home chores, etc. Then next week, my Monday evenings go bye bye as I have a study beginning on Monday nights.

You aren't alone!

Not an idiot!

Sounds like you're being really harsh with yourself.

What's the plan?  How many minutes/hours are you trying to get in?

Sounds like from your post that you're working out, but I don't see much on your log - are you logging it somewhere else?

The high achievers are here for motivation - not to make us weenies feel inadequate - back off yourself a moment - looks like you've got a bit of time before you need to be there (IM 2013! - cool goal!)

Consistency will be your best friend - Promise!!!

Another non morning person here, the only reason I get up at 5am is an emergency or a race.

Its a hobby to me, I have to keep reminding myself when I get to rough on myself. I used to feel bad when a workout did not go well or I had to miss one, or I was to lazy to get up at 4 to do it because I had a committment at night or something.

I substitue the early am workouts by doing them at lunch.

It is supposed to be fun, when it becomes a 2nd job or guilt trip, step back and reassess.

Remember why you got into it.

exactly amazon, you throw in ft work and ft school and I just started getting a tad frustrated. For no real reason either!!! I was fine for 4 months!! then BAM!

I am just starting to log here. I had a plan that I printed out and followed, but I realize that the online log is what people like to see when asking for help so I've only been at it a couple of days I'm getting there.

I was only looking to get in at least 2 hours before work, but I'll get there one day. I'm feeling better about it, but I just wish I was a morning person LOL

Folks,

I am a morning person. I have been getting up at 4:00 AM since I was 12 years old (morning paper route). I am so glad that I can do this. My wife is not a morning person. She tries a few times a year to force herself to get up at 5:00 and it just makes her miserable. I don't know how much you can do to change this, I think you are who you are.

I have 2 kids and 1.25 jobs... So unless I train it the morning I have to ask my wife for a favor...

Get everything ready the night before. Literally lay it all down at the foot of your bed.  Just get up and start to dress.  There at times I am 5 miles into my bike ride and I am still waking up...  The morning swims are the best.  I always hate to run no matter what.....

Unless you are like me and start to drift asleep while swimming.  Yes, it happened.

Seriously though.  When you have two workouts, and they aren't specifically designed as bricks, split em.  Nothing wrong it it.  And frankly you will probably get a better workout if you do.

It's better to split the work outs anyway. I'm also not the biggest morning person.

I'm not good at morning workouts - mainly b/c I have issues going to bed early enough AND because I already get up so early just to get to work on time, it's just hard to add an extra 1.5 hours.  When I do my morning workouts, I make them my trainer rides a lot and catch up on tivo.  I make it work and do the best I can.  Don't be so hard on yourself at all!!!

You're putting a lot of pressure on yourself. I tend to do the same thing and find that I enjoy myself less when I stress endlessly about when/how hard/how fast I work out. Some days you just have to take what your body gives you and be happy you can get out and exercise at all.

In terms of 2X/day, almost all my riding is split- 10 miles to work and 10 miles back. I only ever ride further on weekends. The advantage IMO of splitting the workouts is that each one can be a quality workout, rather than losing interest/focus mid session. I'd suggest maybe splitting some workouts in two and mixing it up so that you get up early some mornings but sleep in on others, but on days you sleep in and work out for less time in the morning you can consider doing a workout at nightl. Obviously this is without knowing how hard you are training, but I am assuming you are trying to get in some serious training time. Also, you need to be careful you don't burn yourself out- if you enjoy it you will be more likely to make it a lifetime habit and get to that IM 2013 goal.

The other option is becoming independently wealthy, quitting work and working out whenever you want!

Whichever route you go, good luck. All of us with lives, jobs, kids, etc. wrestle with this question. I find being flexible is the only thing I can do to get everything in. And sometimes you have to suck up the fact that life gets in the way. But bounce back the next day and keep tri-ing..

I am the epitome of the Morning Person. I'm up between 2:00 and 4:00 AM every day after going to bed between 9:00 and 10:00. No alarm. Weekends, holidays, whatever, I'm up way before sunrise.

I still swim before work and bike after work and only do two or all three in a row on planned brick days.

I don't see why you should feel like an idiot, it's a good work out practice.

I like that option MUCH better.

But I won't tell you that the 138 million dollar lotto in Georgia was bought at a gas station I was at on the satuarday it was sold. Nope. I won't tell you that.

Not a morning person here, either. How do you folks get up at 4 a.m.? Goodness.

Fortunately, my spouse sleeps until noon on weekends, so I don't have to get up THAT early.

I have consistently gotten up early to swim or spin class before work, and I find once you get in the habit, it's easier -- but it's doing it those initial week or two that is the killer.

Any chance you might be able to get in a workout on your lunch hour? That might help releave some pressure.

My parents grew up on farms and I spent most of my adult life in the Army. The first 20-30 years is rough but the last 10-20 years it's been a lot easier

I hear ya I can't even get the two hours in unless I'm up doing a 4AM workout (and heck no that ain't happening LOL). I'f I'm not in the shower by 615 then I'll be late for work and even worse may miss my cup of coffee...LOL...

I usually start between 5 and 5:15 depending on how many times I hit the snooze button. Of course I get the best workout if I'm right there when the doors open, and even have time for a sauna sometimes!

Working out in the morning is great once ya get used to it. I have my little group of ladies that I chat with in the locker room while we are all dressing and we've dubbed ourselves "The 5AM Club." The fresh hot coffee is an added bonus. I've found that my atitude is so much better when I show up for work, I feel good, fresh, and energized, and I've already got in a good workout! If you stick to these morning workouts...you might find yourself getting addicted Cool
