If you know someone with a kayak, canoe, just get them to follow right beside you with a GPS it wont be down to the yard, but will be pretty close

I have a pretty good idea of how many strokes it takes to cross 50 yards. I count my strokes. Not terribly accurate but it's a ballpark estimate

lots of people have success with putting garmin in plastic bag and then in swim cap.

I was going to put mine in a waterproof gizmo that I got for my phone when I kayaked and just wear it hanging down my back

put the garmin in a zip lock bag and put it under your swim cap. thats what I and others do.

If there are decent landmarks where you swam, check out google maps (or one of the equivalent sites) with the 'satellite' option turned on.  I did an OWS in a lake and swam from a house to a buoy and back, and I could see the buoy and other landmarks on google maps, so was able to get a pretty good estimate on the distance.

I have a really nice laser rangefinder, so if I am going swimming anywhere across a lake that is less than 1200 meters each way, I can figure out how far it is across.

If you track your training with this site, you can click the "Add New Route" button in the swim section which will give you a Google Maps backed tool to draw your path in the water (if you know it...big if), and it will tell you the distance.  I just did this today in a lake.  I swam from one rocky outcropping to another and back and I could see both points easily on the satellite map.

An easy way, albeit not super-accurate, would be to use this:  http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

You can zoom in on the area you swam and plug in the approximate route you swam.  Give you a rough estimate to the distance.

try a digital range finder... I have one I use for shooting that is accurate +/- 25yds out to 1000yds.  It's just one option.

I have never tried the gps idea... but I think it is a good one. (by idea i like the canoe kayak idea best)

I use one of these. http://www.semsons.com/iwatrblmagps.html

Same GPS chip as the Garmin, but much smaller, easier to operate with one button and much, much cheaper.

Ive used google earth and that gives me a pretty good idea of how far I've swum.

If you're going to bring your garmin swimming, spend  $20 and get a dry bag from a camping/kayak store instead of just a ziplock.   Better protection.  They have some that can attach to a belt, or you can tie it to you and drag it along like a balloon.

If you don't want to put the Garmin in a baggy, you can get the distance manually with your Route Tracker. And if you do use the Garmin to measure it, you can still upload the course so you can add the distance automatically in your training log.
