Subject: Chamois butter?

I've recently begun having issues with chaffing while I'm riding and have purchased some chamois butter which has helped.  I have Steelhead 70.3 coming up this weekend and I'm wondering if I can apply it before the swim and have it last, or do I need to apply it in T1?

I lather up with Vaseline before the swim and it last for the bike.   I've never used da butter.

Good luck at Steelhead!

Although, I use Chamois butter for all my rides, I go with "Bag Balm" for races.  Seems to work better after getting wet.  You can get it at Walgreens for less than $10 and it lasts 4-ever.  I use it on my toes before runs, too.

Hammer's Seat Saver or Body Glide for me.

Both have been fine for me to put on before a swim.

I've tried quite a few: Assos smells good and is a little tingly but is not very thick so it seems to "go away" quicker. Chamois Butt'r is OK, Belgium Budder is my favorite so far and you can buy the little packets, lube up before the swim and then re-apply later with another packet. Desitin Clear for diaper rash is also good and is pretty thick and seems to stay on real well.

For me, body glide is #1 and Chamois Butt'r or "butt butter" as I call it, is #2.

For long rides I use both and for long runs I use just glide.

Thanks for the responses so far.  I know this is something I should have tried in training, but..... I have a stick of body glide and I got a free sample of another sport lube that I've never heard of.  So I'll just slather it on before the race and hope the water doesn't wash it away.

I use Aquaphor as it doesn't rinse off in the swim.

Butter for rides, lots of body glide for races. I apply the glide to both myself and the chamois and it stays put very well.

You can buy individual/single use sized Chamois Butt'rs at rei.com.  They're expensive, but worth it to reapply on the really long rides and races.

x2 on Bag Balm. If it's good enough for Vermont cows, then it's good enough for me.

So, I will admit that I have never used any butters or glides.  I have only competed in one tri, and it was a sprint, so it wasn't really necessary.  Now, I'm addicted to the sport and am sure that I will need some sort of lube for longer distances.  I hear people talking about the different varieties, but wouldn't even know where to start.  Where do you apply these butters and glides?

Chamois butter for rides, but not triathlons.  It washes off in the water and would be difficult and akward to apply in T1.  If you're willing to spend the time in T1 to shove your hand down your tri-shorts/suit and then towel off before hitting the road, OK.  I've always gone with BodyGlide and had success.  But by all means, you should use some sort of lubricant.  Don't attempt it raw because,

"There's always time for lube!!!"

Not everyone uses it, and everyone has their own preferances.

I only use chamois butter on long rides (100+ and only in the summer) and I only put it on the chamois of my shorts before a ride.

I do use body glide between the inside of my Quads on long run's when it is hot only.

Others bath in it (not litteraly ) but use it all sorts of other places like shoes, ankles, elbow pits, shoulders, nipples, the list goes on and on.
My recommendation is to not use it till you notice some chaffing in particular areas as your time/distance increases and then use some in those areas only.

Just don't keep them in the Bento Box where they can be confused with a Gel packet.... Tongue out
