Anyone interested in starting a Tri-begginers group in the Coquitlam/Port Moody/Port Coquitlam area ?

Hi Ziv,

Check with Pete at tri3sports on St. Johns - they already run a tri-city tri group.  They welcome all levels, as I understand it, as well.

WHAT? Not too sure where or what you checked out, but just so you know, I started riding with these guys on my mountain bike. The entire group is made up of EVERY level of triathlete from people that come out socially to people that have turned to pro. Make sure you check it out, great resource, the owner of Tri3Sports that runs the club is a great guy that has a ton of info and advice. He can be a bit tricky to get a read on, but the group swims, rides and runs is worth a lot. Just know it really is for beginners though, hope to see you out there. The winter classes for spinning would be a great time to sign up as well. If you want some more info on the club, PM me, I'd be happy to help you out.

I used to be part of the club. It's actually more geared towards beginners than advanced triathletes. I was looking to get more out of the club to help me improve and it didn't really have that. I was talking to the pres and he said it's more of a "social" club and most people didn't want any kind coaching sessions, etc. If you're a beginner, it's a great place to start IMO.

I actually went for a ride with these guys as well (on my really old crappy road bike) and it was my second group ride ever, and I had no problem staying just off the front.

I definitely noticed the "social" vibe.  Definitely seemed like a great group of people (well, I only rode with them twice) and I'm sure you'll make some friends and new training partners!

As in a lukewarm attitude towrds someone coming into his shop interested in joining the triathlon community?

I went in there hoping to get information but left with the opinion that perhaps I should start training on my own and check back again in a year or two. Or three...

Hazmaster is quite correct regarding Peter at Tri3 , he is a little stand-offish at first but he does warm after time.Odd for someone in retail/service environment granted but he does come around Smile

I also heard that a mythical creature that used to live in Vancouver is there. He shows up every once in a while...during the race season...then he just vanishes.... must be that gear he wears!

RE: discussion about Tri 3 owner ..... I went in to the store several times and found Peter quite a challenge to talk to....but the next time, he was awesome...answered alot of questions...helped me set up some things differently on my"economy" triathlon bike and was super helpful.

Pete is a genius with a wicked, dry sense of humour. He runs a great 10 week course at the start of the season to ready noobs for a sprint triathlon that is reasonably priced and has a decent curriculum. I can't say much about the social training group as I'm a lone wolf sort of dude when it comes to training (mostly because I like to fail where no one else can watch), but I can't see him operating an elitist training group.

I think he probably holds more course records for his age group across North America than anyone, but he's too humble to let everyone know about it. He can do an entire 1/2 ironman in about the time it would take me to complete the bike leg. He's saved me a whole lot of money, pain, and time with his advice and once helped me re-cable my bike, in his shop, with his tools, during business hours, and refused payment. Pete $#&*ing  rules.
