Subject: RE: Can you wear a hydration backpack during the bike???Check the specific rules of the race re number display (most do not require the paper number for the bike, only the run) , but in general, yes, you can |

Your race may very well require it to be on the front, in which case it doesn't matter. A race belt will solve both problems, though, since it will be below the hydration pack, and you can ditch the pack in T2 if you want to. |

Will be participating in my first tri on Oct 10 San Diego Classic. Was wondering if you can wear a hydration backpack on the bike course, or is that illegal, does your number have to be displayed? Yes, I can (the smart-azz answer Now, if you are asking if a participating athlete is allowed to wear a camelback device for hydration purposes in a triathlon race, then check the race rules to see if it states that a camelback device is allowed or not. If there is no rule stating that a participating triathlete can NOT use one, then wear/use one if you feel that you need to. Your bib # needs to be displayed. Usually the race director will state that the bib # needs to be visible on the back side while on the bike, and visible in the front on the run. I'd recommend getting a race belt so that the bib # hangs down and can be seen instead of being covered under the camelback from being pinned on the shirt. |

I did not bring mine for my season opener this year and almost ate it a couple of times trying to hydrate. Just make sure that you're following the regs for displaying the bib #. You won't see a lot of people with camelbacks on race day. I don't know what they know that I don't. I find it simpler to reach for my shoulder than to reach between my legs when I want a drink. |

Elite 5316![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Can you wear a hydration backpack during the bike???Most folks put hydration in the frame = less work. If it is a first try, it is probably a shorter try meaning that you likely do not need much hydration. (all assumptions based on little info). Read up on what the course offers. |

It went on while I was putting my feet in my shoes. If you are taking 20 seconds to put on a Camelbak, you need to work on transitions! As for drag, I was riding a mtn bike. Seriously, the drag that a Camelbak added was NOTHING! Of course people with 2K Zipp wheels aren't using them, but they are much farther along in their tri careers. But for the run, people run with hydration belts all the time, what's the difference? I used it because I was going through a period of having a mini-mental black every time I got thirsty. Instead of figuring out how to train for grabbing water and drinking it on the ride or run, I raced like I trained. Again, riding a mtn bike, no bottle cages. Sure, once you are getting aero, no hydration pack (though I've always wondered about bottle vs pack-under-jersey for long rides, HIM or longer). But until then, I find them a great solution. Oh, I should note, I use a specific XC running version, so it stays nice and snug. |

Expert 829![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Can you wear a hydration backpack during the bike???I did my first Tri last weekend, a short sprint, and saw two people using camelbaks on the bike. One of them wore it on the run too. Doesn't make sense to me, I think you'd be better off learning to grab the water bottle from the bike frame, it's not that hard. And the run has water stations, no reason whatsoever to carry hydration there! |

Regular 115![]() | Subject: RE: Can you wear a hydration backpack during the bike???I borrowed a road bike with no bottle holders for my first tri so I wore a camelbak just for the bike. I dont like to run in them and there should be some aid stations along the way to keep you hydrated on the run. I wore my number on the front of my shirt and we had numbers on our bikes as well. Hope that helps. For your first one go ahead and do it but water bottles are way easier. |
