Google is no help.  I asked here and was answered that it has a lot of cows but that just seems like somebody trying to pull my leg but then again it could just be true lol  No way to tell.

The burning question still remains....

Cows is the correct answer.

Yup, lots of dairy cows on the bike course.

It's also fun on the swim because everyone at the first turn Moo's while they're swimming.

To be fair, there are very few cows actually ON the bike course. I only crashed into three.

Huh. Never heard the "mooing" on the first turn thing before, and I've both participated in and spectated/volunteered at the race several times.

The "mooing" in the swim is one of the highlights! Only on the first loop though...

You've been away from IMoo for too long, there is only one swim loop now.

You're doing it wrong!

Then again I've never actually done the race. I've ridden the course many times and inevitably will moo at some cows along the way. Yes, I speak cow.

The Hoax story:
Bessie, a Guernsey that lived on a farm in Mount Horeb that was just off IM WI bike route, had a thing for bicyclists that would ride by the farm.  When Bessy saw bicyclists flying past her pasture, she would trodden over to the electric fence by the road, and with much enthusiasm, would "Moooooooooooo" quite excitedly.  Well, she had a field day (no pun intended) on the day of the first Ironman WI.  With hundreds of cyclists whizzing by her, poor Bessy was so overwhelmed from the energy and excitement, she had a heart attack and died.  The news spread quickly, and when Iron Mike heard of this at the finish line, he gave a small rememberance at the 17 hour mark saying "Bessie!  YOU ARE AN IRONMOO!"
It's still quite a touch story for all of us locals.

Probably what really happened:
Due to the swim setup and number of participants in Ironman, it looked like cows were being herded, and along with Wisconsin being the dairy state it was inevitable that someone conjured up the "Moo" part and participants started mooing as they made the first buoy turn (and sometimes heard while riding out on the bike route past the farms).

Good stuff, Phil.

I'm still blown away by the mooing thing on the first turn-- I had never heard that. I will say when I rounded that first turn I was almost eerily separated from other swimmers-- and I was middle of the pack and actually touched the corner buoy.

I don't remember this either, of course, I was so far away from everyone and off-course by that time it really didn't matter. I did say "mooooove", but all the people on the boat I nearly ran into said "if you go any further this way, you will go under the bridge."

I stopped, picked up my head, said "COW-PIE", turned around, and just kept swimming....

Lisa -- they just switched it to a one-loop course this year, so you're still all good. Hope you don't take TOO many years away from Madison, though...
