the bloody, graphic violence in movies?

I had some time to watch "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", "300", and "Clash of the Titans" this weekend.

Everyone of them had at least one graphic decapitation.  Unreal.  Have I got that immuned?  My older boys were even watching these along with me, and I can't believe I allowed it and didn't say anything.

I felt like playing "Vicarious" over and over the whole time cranked to the hilt.

Weird thing is that I still won't attempt to find the Taliban beheading video and watch that (I've never seen it, and do not care to), nor see any of the "Saw" movies.

Discuss.

If you have, is that a bad thing? After all, these are works of fiction. It's not like you or your boys suddenly thinks it's acceptable to walk around decapitating people. At least not before the zombie apocalypse...

I say its A-Ok. That way when the zombies come and the fit hits the shan you won't be hesitant to lop off a zombie head, or bash one with your Louisville Slugger.

But in general, I think plenty of stuff that is rated PG-13 would have been R when I was growing up (I could legally watch an R movie without my parents in 98) and stuff you see in R movies now just wasn't around back then, either due to lack of technology or lack of money to fund the stuff.

And in at least one of those movies, a woman showed her ankle. THE HORROR! THE HORROR!

When I see something like that, I think `That's not what it looks like in real life.' and go back to sharpening my knives and laughing maniacally.

That's the question, is it a bad thing?  It seems like it should be.  How do you feel about that kind of graphic violence, even if it is work a fiction?

And then Barbara Eden had to show her belly-button.  It was TOOOOO MUCH!!

I knew you were related to Ed Geen and Jeffrey Dahmer due to your 1/2 German-ness.

D@mn was "THE" bad word back a long time ago and required at least a PG or PG-13 rating.

I'm sure there have been studies... seems these questions come up about specific things or times. Like a video game, movie, what ever or time. The question has come up though over and over and at this point, it's been like 25 years....

I wonder at this point if it just does not matter. I have been exposed to this stuff for a very long time and I have no issue with defferentiating between graphics and reality. I have no problem with all the blood in the world on a screen. It is even getting to the point of it being too much... in the sense that it is just over the top and not really adding to the story.

Yet in real life I am generally pretty squeamish when it comes to blood and guts. I don't even like looking at dead animals. No way I could work in a slaughter house. All my meat comes in cellophane. I do not really get the connection between graphical gore and being desensitized to it in rel life. Heck, I can't even watch sports videos where some guys leg snaps.... blachhhh.

Especially when they keep replaying it over and over, and in slooooooooow motion, just to make sure they see when and where the exact moment and spot happens. *wince and turns away*

Well, none of it is real and I think people have always been fascinated with gore...especially young males.  It is odd how the rating system will rate a movie PG-13 that shows some pretty realistic violence in graphic detail, and even the occasional F-bomb.  My son wants to see the original Alien movie.  It has an R rating from back in the early 80s.  I don't remember the movie being all that graphic and I don't think it would be rated R today...probably PG-13.  Anyway, I'm going to watch it again and see if it's okay for my son to watch.  Vacation is another on that is rated R...not so sure it would be today.

That is one of my top three running songs.

I used to think the cartoonish stuff was too over the top and desensitized us. But it may be so unrealistic, it just passes. I still watch Dexter, Boardwalk Empire and Homeland, all very intense. But I haven't watched Law and Order SVU in years. Cant't do it. My wife works with a population that hss a lot of sexual abuse cases. I just can't take entertainment from it, even the vengeful satisfaction when a perp gets nailed. I also found it was less likely we'd order pizza for quite some time after watching that show.

I was watching Sons of Anarchy on Netflix the other day and in one scene, someone got shot point blank in the face 5 or 6 times. I told my wife I couldn't believe that was allowed on TV.
