Or maybe an exchange where you can post what single socks you have and what you are looking for. Of course that would mean people being willing to wear secondhand or secondfoot socks.

Which single-sock owner would get the pair?  You'd need some way to establish priority (between two people who want the same sock, the person who had donated more than taken would get it, for example).
