Fifteen months ago, we adopted a sweet little black, short haired kitten from a no-kill rescue shelter that runs out of our local Petsmart. We applied, waited to hear, and the "foster mom" came to our house to make sure we were a "suitable" home. (Seriously, they do home visits.) They approved us, and "Frank" (my daughter picked his name) joined our family. He was a little sweetie, and became very attached to me, and I to him. Back in January I had requested copies of Frank's medical records so I would know what vaccinations he'd had. He was due for his 1 year vaccinations. After many, many calls, nobody ever got back to me. Part of the adoption fee was that he was current on all vaccinations. However, about that time Frank became very sickand he quit eating. I spent $1000 to keep him alive. The vet ran all kinds of tests, and suspected a disease called FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) which is fatal. His titres showed he had at least been exposed, but the test was not difinitive. All other testes were negative. I asked about the rescue shelters vaccination policies, and the vet told me that they usually only vaccinate for distemper, and that FIP, Feline Leukemia and FIV are not routinely vaccinated for. I was very surprised and quite upset about that. I wish I had known that before adopting through this process. Fast forward to last Friday and my sweet little Frank had to be put to sleep because he clearly had FIP. He had a severe seizure and when he came to, he did not know who I was. He was just 19 months old. I know that we will adopt another cat some time in the future, but I will go through an entirely different process. I will have our next cat vaccinated through our veterinarian. The vet at the pet emergency clinic I had to take Frank to on Friday confirmed what our vet said about shelters not vaccinating for FIP. So, the moral of this sad story is to make sure you know exactly what your kitten/cat has been vaccinated for if you go through an adoption process like we did. FIP is very contagious, and an awful, awful way for a cat to die.
I am so sorry to hear about your Frank. Although his life was short I'm sure it was better than what he had to look forward to before you came along and saved him. I know the pain of losing a pet is very hard, people that don't have pets have a hard time understanding. I'm glad to hear that this didn't turn you against adoption in the future. There is another "Frank" out there that is looking forward to seeing you walk through the door. Good luck to you and your family.
Thanks for the warning, we are actually planning on starting the cat-adoption process next month. You totally opened my eyes to potential hazards! I'm sorry you had to go through such an expensive and emotional process, but you saved us from the same fate.
I'm sure your daughter will rebound just fine with the next kitty. It will be fun to have a fresh bundle of joy around again!
I'm so sorry to hear about Frank. It's very hard to lose a part of your family. How are you and your daughter doing?
I have adopted from shelters before, but my kitten was about 3 months old, so I was still able to get all of those vaccinations for him. If you do get another cat, consider getting one from the shelter, but a younger one. My rescue agency did actually test for feline leukemia and FIP before we adopted so we knew what we were getting into.
Sorry to hear that you, your family, and Frank had a short time together. Poor little guy.
Since this "adoption" agency is so into verifying if you are a good, quality home-life for their pet, it doesn't hurt to make sure that their "t"s are crossed and "i"s dotted, too.
You learn something new everyday.
Was it only his breed that was susceptible, or is it common among cats? Thanks.
My babies were adopted through Petsmart too... through a local shelter here in the area...
They were tested and vaccinated for both FIP, feline leukemia and FIV. My friend, however, was not so lucky and she lost her little Lilly in much the same way you lost Frank.
I'm so sorry. I don't know what I'd do if something like that happened to either one of my little troublemakers.

I am glad to hear that. Just make sure you know the process and what your fees include. Good luck!

My daughter cried her eyes out for 2 days but has moved on. Kids are great! It will be fun to get another "baby" but not until this summer when our vacations are over and we are home to bond.

That's awesome. Now that I am more "educated" and know what questions to ask and what diseases to vaccinate for, the next time will be a more positive experience.

newleaf - 2008-04-08 8:41 AM Sorry to hear that. How did your daughter do with everything, was she as OK as she could be?
My daughter cried and cried for 2 days and has now moved on. Kids! She is already asking about getting another kitten. But we have vacations planned for the first part of summer and won't be home, so we will wait until later this year.
I'm so sorry. Having to put a pet down is so hard to do. But you did everything you could for Frank and he wouldn't have gotten such great treatment had he not been adopted by your family.
I know how scrupulous those adoption places can be. We weren't able to adopt a doggie from our local no-kill shelter because they thought we were going to leave him out to be stolen! Thankfully not every place is a nit-wit and we are adopting a nice doggie from the Lawrence Humane Society tomorrow!! Sorry to hear about Frank, but I am glad to know you took good care of him while he was with you! I had a cat stop being himself and stop eating, took him to the vet and $430 later we learned he was just depressed. Gave him some tuna and he perked right up! I was a wreck though when they initially thought he had FIV.
Post some pics of the new kitty when you do find one! [orange ones are my fave ]
