Hey all you crazy MI folks! Since a lot of people were disappointed to see Steelhead turn into a DU, why not do a 'real' half-ironman in September?

There is one in Mt. Sterling, Ohio, on Sunday September 14th
http://www.hfpracing.com/eventinfo.php?eventid=48

Advantages:
1. The cost- only $95 to enter
2. We can camp at/near the race site
3. It will be awesome to hang out, race and camp together- either for the first time, or a repeat of the Steelhead beach house.
4. Dogs are allowed camping
5. Camping costs $28 per site, per night
6. The bike course won't be over-crowded!

Also- make sure you stop over to Yeat's log and convince him to do it as his first. I'm using this thread as peer pressure to get him to race, hehehehe......

Steelhead was suppose to be my first HIM so I certainly had mixed emotions when it became a DU. I feel like I still haven't reached my goal and am seriously considering this race or the Tawas HIM, but after the other thread about Tawas I'm leaning toward this one. How does the Deer Creek course compare to Steelhead as far as hills and such?

You'll find a few race reports from last year here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/search/query.asp?fid=0...

Didn't sound particularly hard, but they did have some hot temps last year.

Responding to a post by Matt posted at the Tawas post. For those non campers, the park has cottages and lodge rooms available too, so you can be on the park area and close to those camping.

I've never used there cabins, but they looked decent enough in some other Ohio parks I've been in and some are mixed right in the campground. Not sure how Deer Creek is as I've never camped there.

Just an idea.

Gah!  I'm just so bummed that I can't join you all!  I had seriously considered aiming for this race back in December, but it turned out that my hubby's MBA reunion is that weekend in Indiana.  BUMMER!!  I hope something like this happens next season, too..

All of the cabins and cottages are booked.  There are still a lot of rooms available at the lodge.  Some are big and might be conducive to the "jazz house" feel, but its still within a lodge and not as private as having our own little slice of Lake Michigan.  They also do not have full cooking facilities.

The Harding Cabin would have been perfect, but its booked.

Rooms are $135 per night and up.   I haven't checked into the camping too much.

Wish I could join in, but the wife and I are headed north the following week for the North Country Trail Marathon.

Next year this will be on the hit list if I get a spot in Beach 2 Battleship IM.

There are campsites available, $28 per night, I think.  We don't qualify to use the "Group Camping Area".
