What are some lessons learned?  Change into different shorts going into the bike after the swim, and then change into different shorts and shirt going into the run?

Of course the Pros and Elites wear the same throughout the race, but what is best for those of us who are looking to finish.

I'm sure it is mostly personal preference, but what have some of you veterans learned.

Wear the same tri shorts throughout the race. Change shirts between the run and bike if you want, but that's a matter of preference. Make sure you have warmer clothes (long sleeves or arm warmers) in your gear and special needs bags. I had arm warmers in my swim to bike bag at IMLP and, like an idiot, didn't grab them. Have extra socks in special needs and bike to run bag. There's nothing worse than running a marathon in wet socks.

Changing clothes is really a personal preference.  I wore the same tri shorts/top combo throughout all of IMWI last year and was very happy with it.

I have seen some people swap out shorts in each transition:  jammers for the swim, bike shorts w/ a thick pad for the bike, and running shorts for the marathon.

Most importantly, if you haven't been training in different outfits, don't do it for the first time on race day.  If you've been training for your brick runs by changing from bike shorts to run shorts, then do that in the race.  If you have been doing your brick runs in the same shorts you bike in, plan to do that in the race.

Also, be aware of what ever pockets you may need for each stage and plan your wardrobe accordingly.

Tri top and tri shorts from start to finish.

"Tri top and tri shorts from start to finish."

Ditto.  That's what I've always done.  That much less to worry about.

Of course, foul weather can change the plans (like 50s and raining ALL day for IMWI'06) :-

Whatever you're most comfortable with. I personally wouldn't do any change outs- just because that's one less thing I have to worry about packing and doing.  The more simple the better.

That's of course assuming that the weather won't drastically change throughout the race.

And, if it does, that's when you pull a big helping of HTFU out of your Transition and SN bags.

Thanks for the help. . .    As I read different threads, my mind starts over working itself, and I start getting into a quandry.

And of course. . .    I forgot the go-to advise of, "race like you trained". . .    And so I knew my answer before I even asked it.  I just needed to be reminded.

Thanks a heap! ! ! !

yes, definitely race with what you've trained with (tried out well in advance).  whatever you've been wearing for your 3-5 hour bricks and/or double bricks...you know that works over a "longer" period of time and is comfortable/no chaffing so go with that.

i wear oomph shorts and my team tri-top the entire race.  no chaffing and works well.  i spend the time I saved changing my clothes and stretch for 60-90 seconds in T2 before the run.

I'll throw out a different idea that I used for IM FL last year; wearing bike shorts over the tri-shorts for the bike. I tried it during training based on someone else's advice, and was surprised at how comfortable it was (really reduces chafing). I know the hard-cores will find it goofy, but it worked great and did not add much time at all to transition. Simply pull them over your tri-shorts after the swim, and yank 'em off before the run. Being comfortable for 112 miles on the bike has to be worth something.

1 piece tri suit is my tried-and-true race favorite. The tri shorts/top thing works for some, but on me the top of the shorts doesn't always meet the bottom of the shirt...which has led to some wicked sunburn.

Thank you for this idea!! I am doing IM FL and have been training with bike shorts and planned on changing clothes in both transitions. This will save me some much needed time!! Im gonna do my long ride this weekend with you suggestion!!! Thanks!!!

Tri top and shorts the whole race.  I had running shorts in the T2 bag just in case but didn't change.  I also had a little tube of lube in both special needs and transition bags to address chafing if I had any.

Just a question. I have been wearing bike shorts on top of my tri shorts, but found the tri shorts to chafe on the run. How about just compression running shorts underneath? Anyone try those?

My only IM I wore jammers for swim (non-wetsuit), changed to bike shorts for bike and changed to tri shorts for run. I'm used to running in these tri shorts for my shorter tri's...they have almost no pad and are very comfortable.

I actually planned to wear the tri shorts for the swim and then put them back on after the bike for the run but at the IM your transition is set up differently than any other race I've done. You had nothing on the ground by your bike. You have a bike bag and a run bag that you take into the transition changing tent with you...so what you take off from the swim is put in your bike bag and you cannot get back to that bag after the bike. So, whatever you want for the run has to be packed the night before in that run bag. At least this is what was done at IMKY.

Needless to say it would have been much easier to wear the same tri shorts and a tri top for the whole race...that is what I'll do next time. Of course, I'll train that way next time also.

I've finished two IMs and numerous HIMs.  Never changed clothes.  I wore Desoto tri shorts and a tri top for the entire race.  I did wear socks on the bike and run.

I seemed to have a similar problem with my Zoot tri shorts chafing during the run when I did my second HIM. I wore an Orca trisuit for my 1st HIM and did not have any chafing issues. I guess I either need to find better tri shorts or stick with the trisuit.
