In my opinion, this pretty much sums up the job that the IOC has done with this Olympics. They turn a blind eye to the real issues, then rip into a sprinter from a small country that doesn't have a country with a huge media presence to defend him. Yeah, his celebration may have been a little much, but did it really warrant the president of the IOC coming down on him? This kid has been the star of the second half of the games. He truly looks like he is just having fun out there.

What do you guys think?

Please.

I'll take the opinion of his fellow competitor (bascially, he's worked hard, he deserves to dance) over the opinion of someone that would award the games to china in the first place

What? Because he celebrated his victory?!?! This happens in sports ALL THE TIME. Did anyone see the Russian Pole Vaulter who won? Or some female runner who won a bronze or silver or something the other night, not even the gold, who was running around and screaming? Or the men's 4x100 free relay team, who basically hooted and hollered like monkeys? You just won a freakin' Olympic medal! I would be going nuts too!

Oh, the problem was easy to identify in the second paragraph:

“That’s not the way we perceive being a champion,” Rogge said.>

Or, when stated conversely:

"Usain Bolt should act the way that we THINK he should," Rogge [didn't] said.

Edit - And again:

“I understand the joy,” Rogge said. “He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was ‘catch me if you can.’ You don’t do that. But he’ll learn. He’s still a young man.”

Once again, it's not the author's meaning but the audience's interpretation.

Bonkers.

I completely agree with you. They are completely mute about 12 year old Chinese gymnasts, but openly criticize someone for celebrating an incredible achievement. Big thumbs down to the IOC on this one.

Bolt made little effort to congratulate the other runners as he wrapped himself in a Jamaican flag and set off on a solo victory lap.

There were other runners?

Hmmm, seems to me when Phelps and co. won the 4 x 100, there was a bit of whooping, hollering and flag waving.

And Phelps gave a dismissive "nice job" nod to Cavic after the 100 fly

Why not go after Phelps?  what's the difference?

I thought it was a little crazy to start celebrating before the race was over, but I've never met a sprinter that wasn't a little cocky.  I do 100% agree that there are more important things for the IOC to worry about at these Olympics.

I enjoy seeing Bolt's personality coming out.  It's a refreshing change from many of the former winners who were extremely stuck up on themselves.

Bolt just turned 22 years old.   IOC president is just jealous of his energy......

I love to see them celebrating. It's the ones who act all cocky like it's no big deal to win at the Olympics that I can't stand.

I enjoyed watching him. Classic quote from a fellow competitor:

“To me, I don’t feel like he’s being disrespectful. If this guy has worked his tail off, every day, on his knees throwing up like I was in practice, he deserves to dance.”

Word.

Bolt just broke a twelve year old world record, and as far as I am concerned he could dance his heart out.

Showboating is classless. Not the mark of a champion.

I think there is a difference between showboating and celebrating an awesome win!

Bolt Phelps and Sally McLellan were all estactic with their wins and celebrated.  I enjoyed watching all three celebrating and enjoying their wins, all their damn hard work paying off for them.   I love Bolt's dancing.

Showboating to me is parading your win arrogantly in front of the rest of the field.

Please explain to me how Bolt who has done the unbelievable and Phelps also achieving unbelievable results are not true champions.  thats just ridiculous.

they are miles ahead of anyone else in the world and are entitled to celebrate awesome efforts, that NO ONE else has acheived.

I think the mark of a champion is being better than anybody else. It's round. And gold. That's the mark of an Olympic champion, anyway. Thus far: Bolt - 2 marks, Phelps - 14 marks.
