I gave a bunch of medals to my friend coaching a girls swim team in Nigeria. They loved them!

I also have a friend who put all her finisher medals in old clear flower vases - they make a nice decoration.

I used to hang medals on my dresser.  Sold the dresser so I bought some hangers from www.heavymedalz.com .  I really like that concept for containing my medals to a small area.  I bought both the 10 hook Triathlon and 10 hook Marathon....with a second row for each.  I made the executive decision that I could hang my half marathon ones on the same rack as my marathons and that would be okay.  And I chose to stick to "Triathlon" so I wouldn't have to have more than one for each kind of race.

I don't often get hardware.  I probably have 2-3 actual awards and they are all very small.  I'll probably buy a small shelf (from Target or Home Depot) to put up next to the Heavy Medalz things for my "me" room.  I'm single, I'm allowed to have a "me" room.  It's also known as the bike room.

One of my races gave away towels with "first" "second" "third" instead of a trophy or "hardware".  That's just folded up and in the closet.  I guess I could hang it on the wall to...but I think it would look dumb.

Syaotblh - 2009-08-07 5:34 AM Does everyone keep their hardware?  Or what do you do w/ hardware won at race?

Someone once told me they take the little plates off the trophies and mount them on a plaque, to save space.  Not sure what they did with the trophy afterwards.

Has anyone donated their trophies to any chairities, causes etc..?

Special Olympics loves donated trophies. Over the years I've probably given a couple hundred to them. (I compete in martial arts as well, where in a 5 event day I'd be bringing home 3-5 trophies at a time).

I much prefer medals now, but even those are starting to accumulate.

The only trophies I keep are ones from major victories (Such as the one from winning my forms ring at the Worlds tournament a few years ago), the rest stick around until they reach critical mass and then we donate them.

You can give your medals away if you don't want them.  Medals4Mettle (M4M) is a non-profit organization that collects medals from runners around the world and distributes them to people who have demonstrated courage by dealing with disease, handicaps or any similar challenge.  They take medals from any distance, 5k, triathlon, marathon...  I am not sure about trophies but you can check with them.  http://medals4mettle.org/

Most are in boxes somewhere ( who knows where).

My most recent first loser medal is right in front of me to remind me why I need to train.

I've given all my trophies to a local TAD (teens against drugs) center. The rebadge them for awards.

If there were 3 people, including me, in my age group in a tri I would come in 4th. This is something that I'll never have to deal with

You just have to find smaller races! I have a 3rd place award from a kayak race where I was one of three boats in my class.

I once finished 5th out of 75 in a triathlon and didn't get an award. They only gave out 3 awards for the men. OA male winner, 1st under 40 and 1st over 40.

I got that 3rd this year (of 4). It felt great receiving the medal, but it took something away when I saw the results online and found out that it was a BOMOP finish.

I just got my first hardware on Thursday for a local Splash and Dash series. Instead of the usual trophies, the RD got handmade ceramic bowls that are made by a local battered womens group to help support the women. Very cool of the RD to get something that helps others I thought. Anyway, since the odds of me ever winning an award again are slim (I'm with DanielG, I come in 4th out of 3! Tongue out I only got this award because I was the only woman that had completed the whole series at the longer distance!) I took my bowl into work on Friday and carried it with me all morning (yes, even to meetings!) Whenever anyone asked "What's that?" I said "It's a MAJOR award!" (Like the dad from "A Christmas Story") It now sits proudly on my desk at work... holding loose change.
