I was just on a plane from West Palm to Atlanta and as I was de-planing I saw Dara Torres behind me. She then boarded my train right next to me but she was on the phone.

I couldn't remember if she'd already qualified, was trying to, or failed to qualify for London, so I didn't want to look like a dork and say "good luck in London." and have her deck me if she missed qualifying.

So I just stood silent and got off at the next stop. Very cool though.

I always thought she looked manly on TV. But standing next to her, I think she looks very ladylike and very nice.

I think she plans on competing, but trials aren't until late June I think.

GomesBolt, very cool.  Her story just floors me.  It reminds me of when Jerry Rice and Brett Favre (yes, Breet Favre!) kicked butt well past their prime.

Wow, sorry for the hijack, but do you realize that Bret Favre threw as many or more interceptions than he did TD's four of his last six years (his prime + years)? I can think of many other candidates for your example than Mr. Narcissistic.

I was referring to 2009 with my favorite team, the Vikings.  No QB in the history of the NFL up to that season had ever thrown for 33 touchdowns with as few as 7 interceptions, prior to Brett doing just that....and he did it at quite the advanced age.  You've gotta give the guy props for what he did on the field that season at his age.

So yeah, I was in awe...Dara's awesome.

I was always impressed by her...until I read her book "Age is just a Number". If I recognized her at the airport, I would have done the same as you, but for different reasons.

Just curious, what was it about her book that left you short of impressed?

An autobiography allows the author license to present the story in the way she sees fit. As much as she tried to avoid it, what comes across is a privileged and somewhat self-centered spoiled brat out of touch and insensitive to others who were close to her (very willing to use and throw away). It's not surprising to have celebrities and elite athletes with these traits. In interviews and at past Olympics she came across as a very likeable person, the way she presented herself in her book may have been an attempt to justify her behavior to these people.

Interesting.  Thanks for sharing that...I had not heard that before.  Maybe my Favre comparison earlier wasn't that crazy then.
