Western values 'are causing mental illness'

THE rapid spread of Western business practices in Japan has caused widespread mental illness and is responsible for a deepening demographic crisis, government officials say.

Statistics indicate that 60 per cent of workers suffer from “high anxiety” and that 65 per cent of companies report soaring levels of mental illness.

Meanwhile, the size of the Japanese population is shrinking, and for the first time the Government has acknowledged that the falling birth rate is linked to job-related factors. Directors of the Japanese Mental Health Institute blame the same factors for rising levels of depression among workers and the country’s suicide rate, which remains the highest among rich nations.

Yeah, I'm sure 60 hour work weeks and cramming into 100sqft of real estate per capita causes more anxiety than did the mostly agrarian society in Japan prior to the 1950s or so.

I find this odd since it wasn't that long ago that all US businesses were touting the "Japanese" business model as superior to ours.
Could be that the Japanese corporate world has begun to limit the amount of Nikka one is allowed to consume during lunch. Or perhaps it's all the net surfing and internet porn taking it's toll.
I'm sure they could all benefit by subscribing to BT.

Hey, we buried the Soviets this way, why not use it against the Japanese? It's all a plot, put on by the current administration. See, they didn't tell anyone this, but I just KNOW they built some machine to go back in time to bring this about. Because that's what they do, you know. It's all a sign of our imperialistic capitalism.

Let's forget for a moment that the West includes all of North America, Europe, Australia (from a cultural standpoint) and broad swaths of South America.

I never made a differentiation between justifiable or otherwise. However, I was thinking along the lines of saying that the current administration was responsible for firing missles at the Pentagon, or that we are the ones responsible for the planes flying into the WTC. I don't mean responsible in a geopolitical sense, I mean directly responsible.

Another example of raw data being misread, labelled as "statistics" and then used to back up a pre-conceived notion. It's too bad, the Times doesn't usually act like a tabloid.

Just reading that article it's clear that a) there's a whole lot more and at the same time some much more specific things, going on than "Western Values causing mental Illness" and b) if anything, it's the shift from one set of rules to another in a specific cultural environment that's causing distress, not "Western Values".

Spain and Greece basically shut down every afternoon for naps. That's a "Western Value" too.
