Subject: Headlamp for running in the dark?
For those of you who run in the early morning darkness, I was wondering if you wear a headlamp or carry any sort of flashlight along?  I was running this am and realized that in spots where there were no street lights, I wouldn't necessarily see a rock or something that might trip me.  If you do use some sort of light, what do you recommend?

When I run in the dark, I sometimes use a headlamp -- the small, light, LED ones are good.  There are many brands.  Go to a camping store and you'll see loads of them.  Probably available in some big box stores as well.

I use one made by Fuel Belt - no complaints. I know they also sell some at Walmart and many other camping stores. The local newspaper delivery guy rolled down his windows and told me that it's good that I have the headlamp on, that he's nearly taken out some runners without.

Get one!  I prefer a headlamp over a handheld light, but it's more of a personal choice of liking my hands to be free.  Currently use a cheap-o Princeton Tec (aurora?) for roads... but it only puts out just enough light to see.  I'd recommend 1 watt or more... but I really like being able to see.

+1 on the headlamp. I got mine at REI. Did most of my running in the evening after dark last winter and it was great.

I have one from LL Bean. It is adjustable but I find it to be a pain as it moves around to much. I typically just run in the dark and am careful to lift my feet up a little more than normal.

Try them out at a outdoor, camping type place to see how it works and where the beam is..jog around. I should have done that as compared to ordering it on line.

I use a three AAA powered handheld from Coast. My main concern is not spooking a herd of deer(thus getting run down by them) or getting hit by a car. I can flip it around to shine behind me when I hear a car coming and this little thing is so bright they will see me.

Don't use a head lamp, but I do have a flashing red light that I clip to my hat or shirt. Got it at 's. Lets the cars see me. I find I don't really need the light to see, since I mainly run in subdivisions where there are house lights and street lights.

Edited to add:

It sensored out the name of the store I got it at. D's sporting goods store. Big Box.

I have a Petzl LED headlamp that I like.  Great for being seen or scanning the ravine that you're running beside.  Headlamps are too close to the height of your eyes to give good contrast on trails.  A handheld will give better shadows for seeing but the constant motion of the light might bother you.

I take the Planet Bike red flashing blinky and clip onto the back of my shorts so that cars see me. Other than that, no light. I run about 30-40 miles per week before the sun comes up and have for the past two years without a spill........ so far.......

The current headlamp that I am using is the Petzl Myo XP. I found this to produce the best forward lighting out of many that I have tried in the past. Also, the light is clear white and does not have the blue cast of many LED lighting choices.

I am one that doesn't feel comfortable with handheld lighting and I have some friends that do not like headlamps due to the bouncing motion. Me ... well I don't bounce much while running so I do not notice that while running. Must be my "old man shuffle" I do while running.  :-)

I use an LED headlamp that I bring with me to go backpacking. Got it at Campmor, THE world's best store ever. (I also like having my hands free, so either I put it on my head, or around my neck).

The biggest problem I have is that the LED is very very bright, even when it's on its lowest setting--it's like driving around with high beams on. So I often have to deal with cars honking at me when they approach.

Still, at least I know they can see me.

Dumb question of the day: can you wear this over a baseball hat?

If you love running with a hat, they make LED lights that clip to the brim of a hat.   Never used one myself, but I've ran with people that have similar gadgets.

Does anyone know of one that will double as one I can use for both running and biking? I would def like it to be rechargable.

thanks

The below by Planet Bike comes with a velcro strap that straps in the gaps of a typical bike helmet, and also comes with a strap that you can use for your noggin (I believe).  Works great for the bike.  Never used it for the run.  I'd buy something separate for each (Energizer makes a headlamp that I use for running that's about $10, not going to kill you on price).

My headlamp works for running and biking. It fits just under the brim of my helmet. It's not rechargeable, but the three AAA batteries lasted all last winter. It's a Black Diamond, and I got it at the local outdoor store.
