Subject: Training Log Spreadsheet???
Hi Everyone,

I am a new member and have been a frequent visitor of this site for several years now.  The information and knowledge from everyone here is amazing and has been a great help.  I look forward to being a member and participating in future discussions.

Last year, I trained hard for 10 months for IMAZ (my 1st attempted at IM distance) and fell short due to a knee injury that sidelined me.  I am finally healthy and plan on hitting it hard this year in preparation for IMAZ 2009.

My question for the group is this:  Does anyone have a workout tracking template that they can share?  Excel spreadsheet?? I am hoping to find a way of tracking my workouts, weekly, monthly etc.  Graphing my progress??

If anyone is using a spreadsheet of some kind that is helpful in tracking workout progress and doesn’t mind sharing, could you please email it to me at [email protected]

I really appreciate everyone's help.

I logged all my training for my first sprint tri in Excel and just started using the training log feature on here (as in have one entry total) and I'm kicking myself for not using it sooner. Check it out should work for what you want.

Yup, I use the logs offered on BT and think they are great. Check them out and I'm guessing they will work perfectly for you.

If you've been lurking for years, then you should know about the BT log feature.  It is extremely in depth and has been around a while.

Thanks for all the advice.  I will try the BT site's resources.

Are you able to export the data?  I am looking for additional options to plot things in Excel.  Also, can you print the data?  I want to post my progress up at work for motivation and sanity checks.

It can be done, I looked at the month calander view and right clicked and exported to Excel, but it would take a serious macro to put it in a useable format. I consider myself very good with Excel, I might play with it for fun, but it is not worth the effort otherwise.

I tracked here and in Excel for awhile, but it just wasn't worth it, I never got the spreadsheet how I wanted it. I still use it for planning , though.

My first attachment posting... we will see if this works...

Here is a template that I use...

Sorry, I am over 100KB, will need to upload elsewhere then edit in a link for you.  Back in a minute...

OK -- here's the link... http://www.coachgordo.com/gtips/publish/index.html // you will see that the sheet follows on from an original free doc that I got, way back, off the rec.sport.tri newsgroup (I think).

you can print the charts as prepared by the BT training log. it looks like you can export data to excel but it is probably not in a perfect format for your use. if you have python on your computer i bet you could put together a small script to munch the data in an exported excel file and add it to a permanent excel file in the format you choose.

that being said, it seems like the charts on this site will plot just about anything you would want.

Sure, just added with Gordo '08.  Not my most impressive year but reasonable considering.  You'll need to 'unhide' the rows on the season planner to see how I laid out my year.

awesome, thanks!

In your logs, everything is by minutes.  Is that how you plan your training as well?

I log by minutes but I plan by quarter hours.  When planning, I always do a reality check in weekly hours.

This year, my main goal was to keep workout frequency high and a chronic training load of 25 hours per week (four week rolling average).  With my clients/athletes -- what we tend to do...

Monday to Friday -- find a schedule that fits their life // this is dictated by their life situation, more than goals/experience

Saturday -- key endurance day // this is dictated by time of year, goals, experience

Sunday -- non-tri day // no workout, or short workout -- focus is on the non-tri aspects of their lives.

By aiming for a little less, I find that people achieve more across and entire year.  Given the importance of consistency, moderate and consistent load (with key workouts and smart overload)... results in the best performance for athletes that live in the real world.  You only need to aim for a "little too much" and consistency suffers (along with athletic development).

The 4 week rolling average thing is interesting.  What's your logic behind that (if you don't mind me asking)?  Is it something that you've come up with from experience that just works, or is it a way to help plan a periodized schedule?

search online for tri_geek_spreadsheet.xls

I personally signed up as a performance member on this website.  Definitely think its worth the approx. $9/mos.  I did look at the tri geek spreadsheet before signing up and thought it looked good.  One of the considerations I had is that with the spreadsheet I could only access it where I had it saved.  It was much easier for me to access my log online whenever and wherever I am.

For most of the year, my chronic training load links very well to aerobic fitness.

During specific prep, my training is about key workouts.  However... to tolerate X hours per week of specific prep... I need X-plus hours per week in my base period (which lasts most of the year).
