Subject: smelly bike shoes

I did a tri yesterday and was just unpacking my tri bag today.

It seems that my Louis Garneau tri shoes with the vents in the bottom and the cool insert inside were soaked.  I have never had this happen after a tri before. I can't imagine that my feet were that wet when I put them in after a run on cement for the T1.  They weren't in with anything else.  My tri bag is sectioned.

Anyway, they STINK!!!!   Anyone have any suggestions for freshing bike shoes?  The smell is in the shoe, not just the insert.  Is there any way to wash the insert so that I can remove the smell from that.    EWWWW!!!

Dude my bike shoes stink too ... I'm not sure what to do with them ... other than to stop holding them under my husband's nose and yelling OH MY GOD THESE STINK!! SMELL THEM!! SEE??

Take inserts out, put them on top rack of dishwasher, add dishwasher soap, no dishes, and wash them w/o drying them.

Remove them and put towels or newspapers to dry as much as possible. If you have a boot warmer add bike shoes onto them.

Thanks Kathy, I'll try that. 

I can't imagine why they were wet.  It was only a sprint tri so it better not have been from pee.  My shorts were drier than my shoes.

Tinea pedis, in other words, you got Athletes Foot Fungus.

Ask your pharmacists for something to take care of your feet.  My suggestion would be a product containingSertaconazole 2%.  Pharmacists will be straight up with you on what they think will work for you.

Wash your shoe inserts in a mild bleach solution and lave in the sun for several hours.  If you can wash your shoes in a mild bleach solution, do that as well and leave in the sun.

Do not wear the shoes until your feet are completely healed, meaning not pits or smell for at least 14 days after you think you are completely healed.  Fungus is stubborn and very contagious. 

Use anti-fungal powder every time you put your shoes and socks on.

Put them in a freezer bag and put them in the freezer over night. It will kill the bacteria and they'll smell "neutral" in the morning. I did this with my running shoes and it worked great.

A scoop of Oxyclean in 3 gallons of water. Dunk them thoroughly, towel dry and place in the sun opened all the way. Works for stinky helmets as well

Hot water wash with any anti-bacterial cleaner like lysol and sun dry for a day or two. Getting them open and drying soon after an event is the best prevention.

BTW, if you try the dishwasher method, make sure you secure the insoles to the top rack. If they fall down and hit the heating element you won't be too happy with the results.

Be sure to use dishwasher soap.  I decided to just use regular dish soap because all I had were those little packs with the jet dry ball in them.  I figured my shoes didn't need the jet dry.  Left for church and when I came back the kitchen floor was covered with suds!!   The shoes smelled better though!

^^^ Yeah I didnt get that either. I mean, I guess it could be. But my shoes stink and I dont have athlete's foot. Its just from sweat and bacteria. I am going to try the freezer method....why not?

Smelly bike shoes = athletes foot?

No fungus amungus!!!  I can guarantee you that.  This was just a weird freaky thing after a day of sitting in an enclosed tri bag.  I was too busy to take care of business and unpack the bag.  My feet are awesome and my pedicure remains intact (that is all that counts, right girls?)
