So is there a breakdown of what bikes are being ridden?

(sarcasm) Expensive ones. (/sarcasm) Sorry, no sarcastic font option on the iPad. I don't know exactly what bikes they are riding, but I keep having to wipe drool off my chin, especially during the prologue yesterday.

Keep in mind that due to team sponsorship contracts, individual riders often have little choice about what brand they ride.

That's less the case in triathlon, although obviously money influences riders' decisions there as well.

Garmin slipstream used Felt last year. My bike is a team issue bike but then they switched from Felt.

I read last year that the only piece of gear that the sponsors don't dictate is the saddle. Even if the team has an "official" saddle sponsor, the riders aren't obligated to use it.

They will rebadge some frames if certain riders don't like them. I remember Boonen didn't like his Specialized and rebadged another bike to fit the team's sponsor. Most famous rebadge was when 7-11 (Bobbke's old team) commissioned Ben Serotta to make their frames and they were given Huffy decals. Yep; Huffy has been a TdF bike!

Wow, I did not know that. I thought riders were stuck with team-sponsored equipment.

Interesting that Specialized has 3 teams riding their bikes.

Also interesting that team Cervelo is gone and Garmin is now on Cervelos.

Also interesting that Ryder Hjesjedal (spelling???) is riding a Canadian bike.

Wasn't it Garmin-Cervelo? I think it just got too rich for Cervelo to be a primary sponsor, although they are definitely still a team sponsor. Then it was Garmin-Barracuda, now Garmin-Sharp-Barracuda. The cost of a running a pro cycling team is around $15mm/year (I think).

That being said, I'd love to have a R5ca for the roads and mountains, and a P5 for TT.

I'm on an R3/P2 now, no complaints

I changed it a bit.  I beleive both Parlee and Lightspeed have had bikes in the pro peleton before.  I'm pretty sure Tyler Hamilton always rode a Parlee but it would always be painted to look like whatever bike company sponsored his team.

Huffy also "furnished" the 1984 US Olympic bikes.  I grew up in Dayton where Huffy is headquartered and it was a big deal.  Back then I did not realize that they just re-badged someone else's bikes.

I've seen a couple of those on eBay. One guy in my weekly time trial has one; a Davis Phinney back up TT bike. Rare and valuable, but exquisite.

And before that, they were Garmin-Chipotle. I bought my Garmin GPS for the car that year and it has an option where you can make the car's avatar on the display look like a burrito.

I am enjoying the new bike technology that is being introduced.  The manufacturers are striving for every aerodynamic watt they can find.  Toward that end, I liked the integrated brakes on Trek 7.  Despite the aero trend, the width of the bottom bracket is much greater than on previous generations.  I guess stiffness trumps aero.

It is fun to see the new stuff.  But my brand new bike (Trek 6.9 with DA 7900) is already completely out of date.

Yep Tyler rode Parlee road bikes and a Cervelo TT bikes both rebranded to look like other manufactures and Lance rode a Litespeed TT one year.  Jan Ullrich had Walser frames rebranded to whatever his sponsor was as well. While this was a lot more commonplace a few years ago we see it less and less these days. It happens a lot with wheels now. Its funny to see XYZ brand with dimples or a disc with the lightweight spokes through the paint. Ive even seen it with tires.

2010 was the last year on Felts for Garmin. A guy here on BT has Dave Zabriskie's old Felt TT frame.
