Beginners - heed my advice: GO!GO!GO!
To be fair, part of the reason I haven't gone is that my schedule wouldn't have allowed it until now, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten around to it anyway.
I was intimidated to go to be in the slow lane, I may have actually been scared for the group to be waiting on the slow guy (gasp!). I'm 2:00/100m for all day and wasn't quite sure what to expect.
I'm an extrovert so don't have a hard time meeting people or being in a new group, but when my lack of athleticism is going to be on full display, I tend to be at least a little reluctant to get into a new group - put me alone in the pool or track, and I can deal with slow or bad form, or whatever.
I went for the first time today and everyone was very welcoming and really more concerned about their workout than how slow I was going to be
It was extremely helpful to have someone right there giving real time feedback on my stroke, kick, breathing etc. I may not see my times coming down immediately, but I can tell this is going to help a great deal.
A few things got me to the decision:
- Recent financial changes caused me to drop my coach, which was long distance, so no more workouts nicely showing up in the inbox
- Recent financial changes opened up more time in the morning - my wife just quit her job to start her own business so she takes our daughter to school in the mornings
- After reading TheClaaw's recent post, I decided to be more concerned about why I was doing this than worry about being the slow guy
It was a lot of fun, and pretty tough, but the coach very quickly saw some holes in my technique that are easily corrected without the stroke overhaul that I was afraid of.
If you've been putting this off, and if your schedule and finances allow (this is free at my gym), I highly encourage you to call the person in charge, ask a few questions, and show up.
I hope this little missive encourages someone to call their masters group today to start improving - the only thing you have to lose is time off your race.
Have a good Tuesday,
